Seeking Manly United Directors

mwfa media · Aug 7, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Manly United Football Club (MUFC) provides a pathway for our MWFA community footballers, coaches, and administrators to pursue their footballing dreams, and is a major contributor to the football ecosystem within Manly Warringah. As a pathway for talented children they have developed players such as Australian Captain Lucas Neill, plus many Matildas, Socceroos, A-League Women, and A-League Men players.

Manly United FC (MUFC) is seeking Expressions of Interest for new Directors to join the Board.

Role: The MUFC Board currently comprises 9 Directors. A passion for football is essential. Residence in the Northern Beaches and previous experience in a Director role is desirable. The board would benefit from new director(s) with experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Experience in a football environment, preferably semi-professional or higher
  • Sponsorship and fundraising strategy and management
  • Finance and/or legal
  • Experience or interest in Women’s football

Commitment: Directors are appointed at the club’s AGM in November for a 3-year term. The board meets face-to-face at monthly meetings at Cromer Park, with the potential to join by phone or video. Attendance at weekend home or away games, and other club events, is desirable. Out of pocket expenses should be minimal but will be reimbursed, as necessary.

Expressions of Interest should be sent to the Chair of the Nominations Committee, Ian Clarke – nominations@manlyunitedfc.com.au – by 22 August 2025, outlining your interest in a Director role and accompanied by a CV.

Willa Pearson Signs For Sydney FC

mwfa media · Jul 31, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Earlier this week, it was announced that BTH Raiders player Willa Pearson has signed a contract with Sydney FC for the upcoming A-League Women season.

BTH Raiders Under-15 Division 1 coach Nate Gray was full of praise for Willa, who has co-captained that group of players for the last three years.

“Willa is the most coachable kid I’ve ever had the pleasure of dealing with. She’s just so intelligent, the way she grasps onto information really quickly, and has that ability to embed what she’s learned straight away.

“That’s probably her best trait. It’s been a real positive for us.”

Willa is usually the only girl on the field when she plays for BTH, but it hasn’t fazed her.

“I think that playing with boys has set her in good stead as well, by challenging herself, definitely in terms of the physicality.”

2025 has already been a big year for Willa. She participated in the recent Emerging Matildas Championships (formerly known as the National Youth Championships), and has also received callups to Junior Matildas (Australia Under-17) squads. Incredibly, Willa’s talents extend beyond football, to other sports.

“She’s a state cricketer, a state netballer, a state AFL player, and now an Australian representative footballer.

“Her big sport focus at the moment is football and cricket. She has a goal to follow Ellyse Perry by being a dual international in both of those sports.”

Wishing Willa all the best for her upcoming season with Sydney FC!

Over $3,500 raised at Bear Cottage Cup

mwfa media · Jul 29, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Avalon’s Over 45 Division 2 teams played out a hard-fought draw on Saturday in an entertaining game at Careel Bay. However, whilst the teams shared the cup, the real winner was Bear Cottage as the teams managed to top $3,500 raised for this year’s event.

Thanks to the Avalon community, players, and friends, all money raised will help provide respite and end-of-life care for children with terminal illnesses and their families. You can help to further smash their fundraising target by donating here:

https://www.superheroweek.com.au/fundraisers/davidhancock/bear-cottage-cup-2025

Even though the teams are mates off the field, all friendships were on hold for the 90 minute game as the tackles flew in from all directions. It was an end-to-end game played at a fast pace, considering all players are aged in their 40s, 50s and 60s!

Avalon’s B team, playing in red, struck midway through the first half with a curling corner by midfield maestro Gerry Forde, which flew just inside the far post. It was a superb goal. The B team had their backs to the wall for the remainder of the half as the A team, playing in white, piled forward with many darting runs by ex-Premier League striker Brad McNicol and his strike partner, Paul Wood.

The pressure continued after the break and the A team were rewarded for their efforts in the 60th minute when Jamie Pullen set up Paul Wood for the equaliser. It remained 1-1 but the B team almost snatched a win in the 89th minute when Ant Ritchie’s shot flew over the bar.

After the game, the Bear Cottage Cup was shared and it now resides at Avalon Brewery, who has sponsored the B team for the last few years. Thanks also to Brown Brothers Skip Bins, who provided the shirts for the A team on the day.

2025 Football NSW State Cup Finals Ready for Take Off

mwfa media · Jul 1, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Valentine Sports Park will once again host the coveted Football NSW State Cup Finals, following a two-year hiatus, on Sunday 13 July. One of the state’s largest premier knockout competitions is set to be celebrated with 15 matches on display.

30 teams from various associations across the state will battle it out for the right to be crowned Champions in their respective age groups, following an arduous run towards the finals.

Incredibly, 699 teams from across NSW kicked off their journeys to win an opportunity in playing in the finals, such was the appetite for this highly regarded tournament.

“It’s been a great year for State Cup football action, and we cannot wait to once again host 15 exciting matches at the home of football, representing various associations from NSW,” said Football NSW’s Competition Coordinator and State Cup administrator Kim Burge.

“The competition amongst teams in getting to the big dance has been fierce, so we are in for a massive day of football action as we proudly acknowledge all the blood, sweat and tears that have seen these teams do their part in featuring in what will be a huge day for Football NSW.”

Manly Warringah Football Association will be heavily supported on the day with ten teams representing the area, while Sutherland Shire Football Association will have seven of its teams participate.

Club representatives from Bankstown (1), Eastern Suburbs (3), Football South Coast (1), Football St George (1), Hills Football (1), Nepean FA (1), Northern Suburbs FA (4) and North West Sydney Football (1) will also feature teams from their associations on Finals day.

Manly Warringah FA’s Belrose-Terrey Hills Raiders SC in particular will have a strong showing as they have four teams set to take part in the 13 Girls, 13 Boys, 17 Boys and 18 Men’s. Northern Suburbs FA’s Lindfield FC will have three of its teams representing them in the 15 Girls, 18 Women’s and All Age Women’s games.

Historically, this tournament pays homage to two important Football NSW Association figures in Andrew Robertson (21 Men) and Bill Cullinan (All Age Men), who have respective Cups named after them. The Bill Cullinan Cup will be celebrating its 20th year, making 2025 a major milestone as Coogee United clash with Caringbah Redbacks for the trophy.
