Get On And Play

mwfa media · Mar 14, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Our 16 grassroots community clubs – including your club – are volunteer-run clubs. They strive to provide the best possible experience for over 20,000 players, from Mosman to Palm Beach.

We are at that time of the year where grading results are handed down, teams are formed, and divisions selected. All of these undertakings, and many more, are carried out by volunteer age coordinators, registrars, and committee members.

These are not easy jobs and they are always done with the best interests of the players at heart. However, on occasion, difficult decisions have to be made.

Whilst there will always be disappointment over some team placements or division allocations, it’s important to not lose sight of why we play football.

We are a grassroots football association, made up of 16 clubs. We are set up to allow children and adults the opportunity to play football on a weekend, and most of the work is done by volunteers.

Abusing your club volunteers, making unrealistic demands of them, or delivering ultimatums, is not acceptable. These volunteers are doing this work in their own time for your child and for you.

All clubs are trying to serve every player in our 20,000 strong football community. They are striving to offer these players the best possible experience and the respect they deserve.

All we ask is that this respect is reciprocated.

Spoke to a Bloke Cup raises over $12,000 for men’s mental health

mwfa media · Mar 3, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Cromer Park was buzzing with football, family, and community spirit on Saturday, March 1, as the third annual Spoke to a Bloke Cup brought together players, supporters, and volunteers for a day dedicated to men’s mental health awareness. With 49 teams across nine clubs competing in the gala day, this year’s event raised over $12,000—surpassing its original goal and setting a new benchmark for the initiative.

The event wasn’t just about football. Hundreds of kids and families packed Cromer Park, enjoying a festival-like atmosphere with music, food stalls, and activities, all reinforcing the message that no one should struggle alone. A huge thank you to Northern Beaches Council for their generous donation, and to Manly Warringah Football Association for donating their flagship venue and providing referees for the senior games.

Players dig deep in tough conditions

With temperatures soaring close to 40 degrees on the pitches, players across all age groups battled through the heat, giving their all in the spirit of competition, camaraderie, and cause.

Co-founder Paul Dunn praised the determination and unity on display: “The effort from every single player today was incredible. They ran themselves into the ground in hot conditions, not just for the love of the game, but to support something bigger — raising awareness for men’s mental health. That’s what this day is all about. Football brings people together, and today showed how powerful that can be.”

More Than Just a Game

The Spoke to a Bloke Cup is about starting conversations and breaking down stigma around men’s mental health. With 1 in 5 men experiencing mental health challenges and 7 out of 9 suicides a day being men, events like this play a crucial role in raising awareness and supporting those who need help.

Funds raised from the event will go towards Spoke to a Bloke’s M.I.N.D.S and Mental Health First Aim training programs, which provide resources, mentorship, and mental health support for men across Australia.

From 8 a.m. until late in the evening, players young and old packed Cromer Park, lacing up their boots in support of an important cause. With teams across all ages and divisions taking to the field, the energy never dipped as match after match played out in the name of men’s mental health awareness. Off the pitch, the face painting station was a big hit with the kids, while the BBQ kept everyone fuelled throughout the day, adding to the community spirit that made this year’s Spoke to a Bloke Cup the biggest and best yet.

Growing Every Year

What started in 2023 with just eight teams from Harbord FC has now grown into a movement, bringing together 49 teams from nine clubs this year. With record-breaking participation and fundraising in 2025, the future of the Spoke to a Bloke Cup looks brighter than ever. Importantly this year, teams from Mosman Football Club, Harbord F.C., Brookvale FC, Curl Curl, ABH United, CC Strikers, Narrabeen and Seaforth F.C. made contributions to the event by fielding teams, showing the support from local MWFA clubs.

“This is more than football; it’s a community standing together to say that men’s mental health matters,” Scott Osborne, Co-Founder added.  Ironically, the cobbled together Spoke team won the Seniors Spoke Cup with Co-Founder and team goalkeeper, Matt Sernig adding, “Next year, we go even bigger.”

Spoke to a Bloke has its biggest fundraising event, Walk for a Bloke, happening in 16 locations in Australia, London, Brighton, Zurich and a number of global participating locations on March 22nd 2025.  For those in Sydney, the walk leaves from Spit Bridge and finishes at Watsons Bay Hotel.  Registrations for all Northern Beaches blokes and women would be appreciated.  Please go to:  https://www.spoketoabloke.org/walk-for-a-bloke .

Join the Movement. For more information about Spoke to a Bloke and how to support men’s mental health, visit www.spoketoabloke.org .

Future Coaches Profile: Phil Freeman

mwfa media · Feb 6, 2025 · Leave a Comment

For this week, we have a profile on Phil Freeman, a local coach who recently completed the Future Coaches Programme!

Phil grew up in Norwich, England, and has always had a close connection with the game.

“I started playing in first school, where I have very fond memories of being lucky enough that academy players from Norwich City FC would come to the school and coach our class, that was such a great opportunity. It had a lasting effect and to this day I remember how those players instilled so much joy and passion into us.”

This led to Phil playing at grassroots level with various community clubs as a youngster. It didn’t stop there, as being a passionate Norwich City fan, Phil spent many Saturday afternoons watching the Canaries.

“I can still remember the first game I watched at Carrow Road, my Dad took me when I was about nine years old and Norwich played Aston Villa in the old First Division. For football fans, the country would just stop at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon.”

Playing through to his teenage years, Phil ultimately transitioned into a park player, along with watching football.

“I wasn’t the most competitive of players and ended up finding more joy playing down the park with my mates, where I improved the most by just messing around and exploring in my own way with a football, those are my fondest playing memories. I didn’t grow enough match confidence but looking back I would have liked to extend my match career as I loved playing.”

Phil ultimately ended up with season tickets and followed the Canaries all over England until he left the country to travel. He would end up in Australia, where he met his wife.

His coaching career started in 2022 as a “dad coach” for his daughter’s team during summer football. When his daughter decided to change teams for winter competition, Phil threw his hand up to become the coach.

“When my daughter changed teams, she joined a new team and they needed a coach, it just so happened that my situation had changed enough that I could take the role on, I couldn’t help but volunteer.”

Phil knew the value of providing quality coaching, as well as the positive impacts a lifelong relationship with the game can bring, even outside the sport.

“Football can give you so much more than the sport itself, from personal leadership and team ethics, through to friendship. I’m part of a messaging group half the world away that still interacts.”

These elements have given Phil an understanding of how youngsters can interact with the game.

“Getting all players involved and having fun is so important, this also means facilitating them with the opportunity to develop their football skills, and it’s fantastic watching a team improve, grow in confidence and using their growing skills on matchday and throughout the season.”

It doesn’t stop there though, as wanting to give the best experience to the players, Phil looked at MWFA’s coaching courses.

“I thought my previous experiences would be enough to be an effective coach but I wanted to give the team more, to give them the best opportunities possible, so I attended as many of the MWFA coaching workshops as I could, and the Foundations of Football course. I was really thankful and also a touch relieved to find the quality of resources and support at our disposal from the coach development team at MWFA. As a result, my coaching skills have definitely been elevated.”

To further enhance his coaching level, Phil recently completed a C-Diploma and also attended the Future Coaches Programme at the end of 2024, further extending his learning.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded coaches, learn about wide ranging topics from sports psychology, philosophy of learning and communication, to tactical analysis and how this applies to grassroots football. My experiences in the programme have certainly made me positively rethink many of my previous methods.”

Going forward, Phil aims to inspire and build confidence in the next generation of players, as well as help other coaches with their development, and possibly even coach at higher levels.

We look forward to seeing Phil’s coaching journey as he continues to give his passion and enthusiasm to the game, help develop women’s football, and give the players at his club a great footballing experience.
