CC Strikers roll over Manly Vale with emphatic 4-1 win

MWFA · Mar 29, 2021 · Leave a Comment

The top-placed team played the last-placed one, and there would be no fairy tale for the latter, with CC Strikers recording a comfortable 4-1 win over Manly Vale on Sunday at Cromer Park 2.

Yet Vale coach Michael Yarnold, his squad decimated by injury, took plenty of positives from the result.

“We’ve now got several guys who aren’t regular first graders who’ve made statements to be included in that first XI,” Yarnold said. “[Despite the loss] I was actually pretty happy given our walking wounded. There were long patches of play that we controlled the match, kept possession and out-played them.

“But we weren’t clinical up front and the Strikers were. The chances they created they finished. They scored three quick goals. Their front-three was very good, particularly Luke Curnow.”

Yet goal of the match came from Brazilian import Gustavo Anacleto who left CC Strikers keeper Matt Smith stranded with a volley out of nothing. Elsewhere Anacleto’s countryman Jadson impressed on his flank, drawing several fouls as defenders struggled to contain him.

CC Strikers coach Ryan Butcher declared himself “really happy with the performance for the most part”.

“We were much sharper in the final third. We created a heap of chances and probably could’ve had a couple more goals. We had the right level of movement and kept busy all game.”

The Strikers roared out of the blocks to be 3-nil up after 35 minutes with goals to Rhys Vorillas (15th minute) and Curnow (20th and 35th).

If Butcher could be critical of a 4-1 win, he’d say that his team “relaxed a little bit”, with Anacleto’s volley late in the first half making the score 3-1.

Yet the Strikers took control again and came up with a big play in the 80th minute when multiple players were involved in a build-up before Curnow notched his hat-trick with a surgical strike into the top corner of the net.

Best for CC Strikers were Curnow who combined well with up-front partner Michael Morrison, while midfielders Brody Strachan and Ryan Berry were busy all game, securing clean ball and dictating the tempo of the match.

Butcher said his squad had set themselves the goal to win all three games leading up to Easter, which they’ve achieved, with maximum points in both grades.

On Vale Butcher said: “At 3-nil down they dug in and took it to us. They got the goal and had a good passage heading into the second half. They made us work hard to stay in control and will cause problems for teams going forward, I’ve got no doubt.”

Rise of the machine: CC Strikers hope to further damage busted Manly Vale

MWFA · Mar 26, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Collaroy-Cromer Strikers have kept clean sheets in victories over St Augustine’s and Narrabeen in the opening two rounds of Premier League competition, and head into Sunday’s clash with Manly Vale (0-and-2) high on confidence.

Goal-keeper Matt Smith is back from injury and firing. The back four of Zack Trisic, Nick Parker, Kory Leung and Sydney FC NPL coach Jim van Weeran have been impregnable. And at the top end Luke Curnow and Michael Morrison have formed a key combination.

And yet, according to CC Strikers coach Ryan Butcher, his team is yet to reach their best.

“We’ve been grinding out matches really well,” Butcher said.

“The organisation and shape have been the most noticeable positives.

“But everyone has another gear to go – at least.”

Butcher declared that he is particularly pleased they’ve kept two quality teams goal-less.

He said his team’s defence and organisation have been key to their winning ways.

“We’ve been up against two sides that play some footy. So two clean sheets is a pleasing way to start the year,” Butcher said.

“We’ve also created chances, don’t get me wrong,” Butcher said of his team’s brace of 1-0 wins.

“But we’re looking to lift the decision-making and quality of the final pass.

“When that clicks I think we will cause some damage.”

Manly Vale, for their part, crippled by injury, have a weapon of their own in Vincente, who’s been scoring goals for fun in FFA Cup – including a screamer in the team’s 2-1 win over Roselands FC on Thursday night.

Vale coach Michael Yarnold said that on his day Vincente is the best player in the competition.

“His goal last night from a free kick was as good as you’ll see – a bullet into the top right hand corner.

“Just a beauty.

“So he’ll be one to watch on Sunday.”

Yarnold said that his club’s challenge was to field a fit squad – and make lemonade from lemons.

“We’ve got 16 injuries in a squad of 38.

“So we’ve tinkered with a few things and implemented some changes, and won a few games in FFA Cup as a result.

“We’ve made a good result from a tough situation.”

Cromer Park to host Sydney FC season deciding match

MWFA · Mar 25, 2021 · Leave a Comment

The MWFA and Manly United will host another W-League match this Wednesday night when Sydney FC takes on Melbourne Victory at Cromer Park.

The match kicks off at 7.30pm and ENTRY IS FREE for all spectators.

The “Big Blue” has been rescheduled for Wednesday night after it was postponed due to the big wet last weekend and is Sydney FC’s final W-League game before the start of the semi final series.

The Sky Blues, with Manly United stars Remy Siemsen and Ally Green playing a crucial part, currently sit on top of the ladder with two matches remaining.

They can wrap up the Premier’s Plate on Friday night when they take on 4th placed Canberra but anything less than a win on Friday will see the season decided at Cromer Park on Wednesday night.

Regardless there is every chance the Premier’s Plate will be presented to Sydney FC at Cromer Park on Wednesday night.

Sydney FC has played two matches at Cromer Park throughout the 2020/21 season with victories against Adelaide United (2-1) and Newcastle Jets (2-0) making Cromer park a happy hunting ground for the Sky Blues.

Women’s Challenge Cup Preview

MWFA · Mar 25, 2021 · Leave a Comment

They call her “Sullo” because she doesn’t go much on  “Jessie Sullivan” as a handle. But that’s her name and goal-keeping is her game, and at Narrabeen Sports last Sunday she proved herself more than adept at it.

Indeed she proved herself a match-winner.

With her Premier League team, Manly Allambie United, leading 2-1 with ten minutes to play in the round one Challenge Cup fixture against Manly Vale, Vale were awarded a penalty.

Striker Georgia Goulding, Vale’s 2020 PL Player of The Year, stepped up and set the strike free. Sullivan threw herself in the ball’s path, only to see it rebound and fall at Goulding’s feet.  Sullivan then saved the follow-up shot, too.

A double-save at the death – a goalkeeper can hang a hat on that in any body of work.

“It was a huge play,” Manly Allambie coach Kyle Cannon said. “We had several contributors across the field and I was happy with the win given our lack of preparation but Sullo’s double-save was the standout. With ten minutes on the clock she probably won the game for us.”

Cannon said his players were understandably rusty given their lack of training much less trials due to ground closures brought about by recent rain.

“We gave away a bit of possession and were rusty on touches,” he said. “We need to work on controlling the ball and limiting the opposition’s chances of getting on top but given all the rain and grounds being closed, it was just good to get out and have a run!.”

This Sunday at Narrabeen Sports High School, Cannon’s team take on AL1 side Avalon and he admits he isn’t across his opponent’s recent form.

“Our AL1 side played them two years ago and they were quite strong.” He said. “I know they have a few former Premier League players and we’ll still have to be on our game to get the win.”

Sunday’s match kicks off at 11am at Narrabeen Sports High School, the middle fixture of a quarter final triple-header with Seaforth vs Mosman at 9am and Brookvale vs Wakehurst at 1pm, while BTH are already through to the semi finals after defeating Beacon Hill 1-0 last weekend.

Northern Beaches Council continue with synthetic project and strategy

MWFA · Mar 24, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Last night Northern Beaches Council rejected a motion to pause the roll out of the future instillation of synthetic sports fields until after the NSW Government released a recently commissioned report.

The delivery of multi-purpose synthetic fields is an important part of the Northern Beaches Council and MWFA strategy to arrest the continuing issue around a shortage of sports fields.

The Councilor’s overwhelmingly voted against the motion and continue with the synthetic strategy and projects with Council staff continuing to consider reasonable and balanced measures to minimise any environmental risk.

It was made clear that this motion, even though it ultimately was not adopted, did not include already planned and announced fields at Millers Reserve and Careel Bay, as well as the renewal of the existing surfaces at Lionel Watts, Cromer Park, Melwood and Narrabeen Sports High School.

While discussing the issue, a number of the Councilor’s also spoke glowingly about the work our clubs and their volunteers do to get 20,000 people playing organised sport each weekend and their responsibility to make sure we continue to have sports fields to train, play and connect as communities.

Below is what MWFA CEO David Mason read to the Council Meeting last night:

Thank You Mayor Regan and Councilors.

My name is David Mason and I am the CEO of the Manly Warringah Football Association and Manly United Football Club.

I respectfully speak today in relation to Motion 15.8 (Pause on synthetic sports fields) and do so representing 20,000 football players on the Northern Beaches.

This year our playing numbers have grown by 1000 residents. One year’s growth

Our 20,000 players come from a perfect cross section of the Northern Beaches population. People aged from 5 to 71, men and women, all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. Staying active and connected through sport.

Three years ago the Northern Beaches Council released its Sports Ground strategy, which highlighted a significant undersupply of sporting fields. It talked about helping us be “more active more often!

I read one paragraph from its executive summary:

Council has gathered the evidence, sought the advice of independent experts and conducted a broad community engagement program to seek the view of all Northern Beaches residents.

Back in 2017 we had 17,648 players and Council declared we were 14 fields short of acceptable levels. Today we have 19,708 players. That’s an 11.7% jump and equates to the need for 7 MORE fields.

The equation is going backwards and we’re not the only sport growing.

Synthetic surfaces were a crucial – and statistically popular – part of the Sports Grounds strategy and since 2017 we have seen 3 new synthetic surfaces – at Lionel Watts and Cromer Park 2.

They have been wonderful additions to the broader communities across different sports and activities. These surfaces have been remarkably well received by the 20,000 local football players. The only discussions we hear about synthetic fields is from clubs and players who complain they don’t have one.

Just last Sunday they allowed 550 local players (men and women) to play matches amidst one of the heaviest rain events we have experienced.

The criticism and feedback we do get, and it is consistent throughout the whole Northern Beaches – all 17 clubs – is a growing lack of sports fields.

The motion before Council tonight would challenge our collective ability to offer residents a place to exercise and come together as a community on the weekend to play grassroots sport. Essentially, we could get to a position where we would have to cap player numbers and stop people from playing.

That would be a huge step backwards as community sport is an important part of the Northern Beaches way of life. The Northern Beaches Council website uses terms like busy sports fields, active lifestyles and great services and infrastructure.

While all of this paints the current picture, Importantly, there is a responsibility, and possibility, to work together to integrate the needs of all residents in the future.

Technology and key learnings offer improvements to the way synthetic surfaces are constructed and Council staff are in tune with this.

Using cork instead of rubber has already been used in two new synthetic sportsfields by Ryde Council. Through my dialogue with Senior Council staff I am aware that they have visited these fields and investigated this option.

The latest synthetic fields also incorporate filters to minimize the risk of particles leaving the fields, water is captured and recycled to irrigate surrounding areas. Just some examples of the positive environmental impact synthetic surfaces can have. No mowers. No pesticides. No chemicals to bring grass surfaces back to life after they are trashed all winter. Not to mention a far greater use of the sports field spaces we have available.

Football – as with other sports – has a Heat Policy which dictate matches should stop when the temperature reaches a certain point. As winter users, this rarely, if ever, comes into play.

I respectfully suggest that the next step isn’t to pause the roll out of synthetic surfaces until a State Government report is commissioned and released. I believe the reasonable questions and points raised in this motion can and should be addressed by incorporating the available developments and risk management processes into the design and construction of these sportsfields.

That would, after all, be in line with Councils stated Vision and Values, which I quote directly from the Council website:

We are – Safe, inclusive and connected, our community lives in balance with our extraordinary environment and with each other.

Because, ultimately, we all need to live together

Brookvale rolls over Pittwater RSL in rain-soaked grand final replay

MWFA · Mar 23, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Brookvale FC ran over the top of Pittwater RSL FC on Sunday evening to claim a 2-0 victory in the grand final replay at Cromer Park.

After a scoreless first half on a rain-soaked night, goals to Mattias “Mossy” Zervas and Josh Ciabatti iced a dominant second-half performance by the men in blue.

Indeed such was Brookvale’s control of the fixture, by the end there didn’t appear much Pittwater could do about it.

Brookvale opened their account in the 55th minute when Zervas latched onto a free-kick by Ash Rycroft that rebounded off goal-keeper Tom Freemantle.

Ten minutes later there was uproar in the Pittwater RSL box when Zervas was brought down and the referee pointed straight to the spot.

Brookvale right wing Ciabatti coolly slotted the penalty into the bottom left corner of the net.

The first half had been an arm wrestle with neither side gaining ascendancy in rain that was heavy at kick-off and didn’t let up all night.

Yet after Pittwater RSL captain Mitch Macedo was forced off with a hamstring injury, Brookvale took control.

Pittwater RSL coach Adam Israel said losing Macedo was a turning point for his team.

“We had to re-jig; as a coach you worry if you got the substitution right.

“We were well in the game until Mitch went off.  It halted our momentum and we kind of imploded from there.”

In the 54th minute Pittwater’s Jonny Walker was sent off for a second yellow card, his foul leading to Zervas’s goal.

And from there Pittwater could not find a way back into the game.

“We were ill-disciplined,” Israel said.

“The game plan went out the window and Brookvale took advantage.

“They kept the ball, played with it and controlled the game.

“There were a lot of things that weren’t pleasant about it.

“It was pretty disappointing.”

Things were different in the BFC shed.

“Our dressing room afterwards was a positive one, as you’d expect,” Ciabatti said.

“Everyone was happy with the effort we’d put in and the result that came from it.

“We didn’t really have a standout player.

“Everyone did what they needed to do.”

Ciabatti said the team – which sits on the top of the Premier League following last week’s 5-0 win over Seaforth – can improve their intensity at the start of games.

“We were a bit slow to start,” Ciabatti said.

“But after our half-time team-talk we executed our individual roles, played up-beat football and increased movement of the ball.

“And it paid off with a very good win over quality opposition.”
