MWFA to Host Another C-Diploma Course

MWFA · Jun 27, 2024 · Leave a Comment

MWFA is pleased to confirm that we have locked in a C-Diploma coaching course at Cromer Park for later this year. Please see dates and a registration link below. Local coaches are being given an exclusive registration window before the course is made available to the general public, as places are limited.

The main focus of the required coaching competency on the ‘C’ Diploma is on the technical aspects of the game, which includes teaching the techniques of passing, receiving, striking the ball and running with the ball, along with defending techniques to regain possession.

The required technical knowledge will be supported with an understanding of The Principles of Play and the fundamentals of coaching. Participants will be introduced to the concept of teaching behaviour in different types of practice methods as part of the education program, but also to provide insight into the ‘B’ Diploma.

The ‘C’ Diploma is a minimum of 60 hours in duration and will be delivered with face to face learning with supplementary online learning.

Coaches interested in attending the C-Diploma must have completed the pre-requisite ‘Foundation of Football’ course in 2024, or the Skill Training or Game Training Certificate in the previous 3 years. If you have not completed either of these pre-requisite courses, another Foundation of Football has been scheduled for Monday September 2, 9 and 16 at Cromer Park, 6pm to 9pm (all 3 nights). Cromer Park is set to facilitate all 15 matches, with Saturday hosting all Girls and Women’s finals while Sunday will see the Boys and Men’s spectacle. The Finals for age groups commencing from the U13 Boys and Girls competitions, right through to the Over 35 Men and All Age Women will take shape.

Two competitions have been named after former administrators and football advocates who have assisted in the development of our game in NSW.

The U21 Men will be taking part in the Robertson Cup, while the All Age Men will be playing for the Bill Cullinan Cup.

Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas was looking forward to seeing some of the best talents across NSW compete in arguably one of the most prestigious grassroots tournaments hosted in the state.

“Football NSW is once again excited about being able to bring the finals of the 2024 State Cup competition to the great facility of Cromer Park, the traditional home of the Manly Warringah Football Association.

MWFA Chief Executive Officer David Mason was proud to see one of the country’s biggest grassroots tournaments return to Manly in 2024.

“The Manly Warringah Football Association is delighted to be hosting the Football NSW State Cup Finals at Cromer Park, for the second successive year.

Vale Ted Blackwood

MWFA · Jun 21, 2024 · Leave a Comment

The MWFA Football Community is saddened to hear that Narrabeen Youth Club and MWFA Life Member Ted Blackwood OAM passed away yesterday after a short illness.

Ted was a true pillar of football on the Northern Beaches and a pioneer, especially for his beloved Narrabeen Youth Club and Narrabeen Football Club. He was the founder of the Narrabeen Youth Club in 1965, which is the original name of the now Narrabeen Football Club.

His legacy lives on in numerous ways as a Life Member of the MWFA (awarded in 2005), Narrabeen Youth (Football) Club and Pittwater RSL Club.

Every season, Narrabeen Football Club recognise a Member with the Ted Blackwood Award, which is given to a member of NFC who has provided outstanding service to the Club.

Ted was also honoured by Northern Beaches (Pittwater) Council, with his name adorning the Ted Blackwood Youth and Community Centre at Boondah Reserve. His impact was felt not just in football, but across the broader community, especially for his work and passion for the youth of the area. He will be sorely missed on Junior Grand Final day as he was an annual visitor to the boys and girls junior grand finals.

The MWFA would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the Blackwood family, Narrabeen Football Club and Ted’s family and friends, both inside and outside the football world.

As a mark of respect, all matches involving Narrabeen teams this weekend will honour Ted Blackwood with a minute’s silence.

May he Rest in Peace.

MWFA Coach Mentor: Gareth Banks

MWFA · Jun 20, 2024 · Leave a Comment

For the 2024 season, MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz and several Coach Mentors have again been visiting MWFA clubs to support coaches at their training sessions with their teams, and occasionally matches too. This is to provide coaches with direct assistance ‘on the job’ as a compliment to the courses and workshops we offer, as well as provide ongoing learning opportunities in a realistic setting.

Training support and guidance is by far the most popular request from coaches in terms of what they feel would benefit them the most in their role, and these Coach Mentors will allow us to have a greater reach in terms of the number of coaches we can directly assist, as well as supporting CCCs (Club Coaching Coordinators) in their roles.

Gareth Banks has been involved in coaching for the past 20 years. He has coached throughout the youth age groups and at senior football across community, SAP and NPL Youth League levels, including at Manly United. He was also previously the coaching director at Curl Curl FC.

He regularly contributes articles to the Football NSW coaches newsletter and previously presented at the Football NSW coaching conference on the topic of coaching in community football.

Gareth holds an FA B-Diploma and is currently in the process of completing the FA Goalkeeping B-Diploma.

Gareth has been part of the MWFA Coach Development team since 2020 and enjoys helping coaches improve their skills and communication to be the best coaches they can be.

Daughters and Dads watch Sapphire Cup

MWFA · Jun 19, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Earlier this month, participants from the Daughters and Dads program were in attendance at Cromer Park to watch the Sapphire Cup game (the women’s knockout competition for NPL NSW, League One and grassroots teams) between Manly United and Sydney University.

The timing was fortunate, with the Cup game on Cromer Park’s main pitches starting just as the Daughters and Dads session was finishing on one of the back fields.

Daughters and Dads facilitator Marilinda Winter was thrilled by the opportunity, as it allowed the participants to interact while watching live football and achieve one of the program’s goals.

“It was wonderful for the daughters and dads to be invited into the corporate box at Cromer Park to watch Manly United play Sydney University.

“One of the homework activities set out in the the Daughters and Dads program is encouraging dads to take their daughters to watch a live match.”

This homework activity acknowledges that there tends to be a difference in the way young girls and young boys consume football. By encouraging the participants to watch live football together, it is hoped that the end result will be fostering a love for football amongst the daughters in the program.

“A big difference between girls’ and boys’ development in football is that girls do not watch football regularly. Boys pick up rules, strategies and terminology from listening to the commentary on professional football games, as well as from playing FIFA on Xbox and Playstation. It was fantastic hearing the dads commentating the game to their daughters and then the girls commentating what they saw happening.

“Seeing a live game allows young girls to observe how the rules are applied. The girls were super excited to observe the women performing football techniques they have been working on, such as drag backs and step overs, as well as watching the women demonstrate skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. Watching skilled players perform at a high level can inspire young girls to emulate their techniques. It helps them understand the pace & flow of football, including how players transition between attack & defence, and also how they position themselves on the field.”

The night also helped create a bond between young girls from the Northern Beaches and the Manly United senior women’s team.

“I think the Manly United team has a new group of fans and the daughters can’t wait to support them at another game soon.”

UPCOMING COACH WORKSHOP: DEFENDING AS A TEAM

MWFA · Jun 6, 2024 · Leave a Comment

  • What are some ideal exercises for players to learn how to work together to protect the goal?
  • How can you get maximum effort from your players in training?
  • How can you work with limited space and numbers in training?

All of these questions will be answered in MWFA’s upcoming Coach Workshop on Wednesday June 12 at Dee Why Oval starting at 6:30pm.

MWFA runs a large number of Coach Workshops at various clubs during the winter season. These coach education opportunities compliment official FA coaching courses, with topics based on feedback received on what coaches would find valuable. For more information about official coaching courses available, please see here: https://www.mwfa.com.au/coaching-courses/

Coaches can attend any and all of these workshops if they wish to, even if they are not a member of the club hosting them. Please ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in so the workshops can start and finish on time. It would be appreciate if all participants can bring football boots (ideally) or runners, and appropriate clothing to play football in, just in case they are needed as players on the night.

All MWFA Coach Workshops are completely FREE, but registration is required.
