UPCOMING COACH WORKSHOP: TRAINING WITH INTENSITY

MWFA · Jul 25, 2024 · Leave a Comment

  • Do you want to know how to get your players to put in more effort at training?
  • Is fitness also an issue for your team even though you might already work on this?
  • Are there any things you can do to better prevent injuries, especially if you push them harder?

All of these questions will be answered in MWFA’s upcoming Coach Workshop on Thursday August 1 at St Matthew’s Farm starting at 6pm.

MWFA runs a large number of Coach Workshops at various clubs during the winter season. These coach education opportunities compliment official FA coaching courses, with topics based on feedback received on what coaches would find valuable. For more information about official coaching courses available, please see here: https://www.mwfa.com.au/coaching-courses/

Coaches can attend any and all of these workshops if they wish to, even if they are not a member of the club hosting them. Please ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in so the workshops can start and finish on time. It would be appreciate if all participants can bring football boots (ideally) or runners, and appropriate clothing to play football in, just in case they are needed as players on the night.

All MWFA Coach Workshops are completely FREE, but registration is required.

David Mason to take up role with Football Australia

MWFA · Jul 11, 2024 · Leave a Comment

The Manly Warringah Football Association (MWFA) and Manly United Football Club wish to inform their members and the broader football community that David Mason has resigned from his position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to take up a role as General Manager – Men’s National Teams with Football Australia.

David has been the CEO of the MWFA, Manly United and its related entities for the past seven years. The MWFA and Manly United Boards would like to acknowledge David’s contribution to football on the Northern Beaches as he led the organisations through the challenging period of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 disruptions, governance change, and helping grow the game in the area. David’s last day will be Friday 2 August.

Among many collective achievements during his tenure, he oversaw the redevelopment of the Cromer Park clubhouse – creating a true ‘Home of Football’ at Cromer Park, leading the MWFA to become the first grassroots football association to pass the 20,000 player mark, and creating a stable ecosystem across the grassroots and NPL environments.

“It has been an absolute pleasure leading the MWFA and Manly United over the past 7 years,” Mason said. “The structure, unity and governance in place between the two bodies and broader football ecosystem on the Northern Beaches is the envy of many and that comes down to the clubs, volunteers and people that are the lifeblood of the game and stable, well-meaning Boards and staff that firmly have the best interests of the game and players at heart.

“I’d like to thank everyone in the MWFA and Manly United football community for the friendship, support, unity and camaraderie and I will take many learnings from my time at the MWFA into my new role with our National Teams.”

The MWFA and Manly United has started a process to replace David and have no doubt that a suitable and experienced candidate will emerge to ensure football on the Northern Beaches retains its position as one of the best and most cohesive football ecosystems in NSW.

MWFA Coach Mentor: Patty Faria

MWFA · Jul 4, 2024 · Leave a Comment

For the 2024 season, MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz and several Coach Mentors have been visiting MWFA clubs to support coaches at their training sessions and matches. This is to provide coaches with direct assistance ‘on the job’, complementing the courses and workshops we offer, as well as providing ongoing learning opportunities in a realistic setting.

Training support and guidance is by far the most popular request from coaches in terms of what they feel would benefit them the most in their role. These Coach Mentors will allow us to have a greater reach in terms of the number of coaches we can directly assist, as well as supporting CCCs (Club Coaching Coordinators) in their roles.

Patty Faria coached for the first time back when she was 18 years old, and picked it up again four years ago. She currently coaches her son’s U9 mixed team and daughter’s W9 team, both at Brookvale.

She completed her C-Diploma in 2022, and has also been the Coaching Director at Brookvale for the past two seasons, along with volunteering in various roles at the club.

Patty started playing when she was eight years old, earning selection in several representative squads as a junior and becoming a WPL player for Brookvale.

Patty has been part of the MWFA Coach Development team since 2023 and enjoys helping people in general. More specifically, she enjoys having a role in shaping the development of youth players so that we can produce more world class players in the future, as well as helping coaches to do the same and keep more players in the game by giving them positive experiences.

For more information about coach development and support in MWFA, including courses, workshops and resources, please see the coaching section of our website: www.mwfa.com.au/category/coaching-news/

Q & A with Taylor Wilmot

MWFA · Jul 1, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Avalon junior Taylor Wilmot plays for Manly United’s Girls Youth League U14 team, and this is her second season with Manly. Taylor will be busy over the next couple of weeks – she’s been selected in an Invitational squad for this week’s National Youth Championships, and next week she’ll play in the NAIDOC Cup as part of the Football NSW U14 squad!

We did a short Q & A with Taylor and asked her about her footballing experiences.

Position: Goalkeeper

Why do you like playing for Manly United?: I like playing for Manly United because of my teammates, my coaches and the team environment that Manly United create.

How did you feel when you found out you were selected for the National Youth Championship and the NAIDOC Cup teams?: When I found out I was selected for the National Youth Championship team, I was so excited and happy to get to play in Melbourne. When I got into the NAIDOC Cup team, I was super excited to play with a new team, and learn from both the experience and the coaches.

What do you like most about playing in your position?: I like playing goalie because I’m the only one who can use my hands while playing.

You will be playing at The Home Of The Matildas when you play in the National Youth Championship. What are you looking forward to most when you get there? I’m looking forward to playing & training at the same place as the Matildas, and getting to see the facility.

Is this the first time you have travelled outside of Sydney for a tournament? I have played a national futsal tournament in Queensland, and played games in both Nowra & Wollongong. However, this is the first tournament I have played in Melbourne.

What are you looking forward to most about the whole experience? What I’m most looking forward to about this tournament is travelling with new people and staying with them for a week or so, as well as meeting and learning from new coaches. Most importantly, I’m looking forward to learning from the experience and improving as a player.

MWFA SEASON EXTENDED BY A WEEK

MWFA · Jun 28, 2024 · Leave a Comment

The MWFA grassroots football season has been extended by one week.

The extension has been secured after the MWFA has been able to work with Northern Beaches Council to secure the fields for an extra week, as part of our efforts to maximise the number of games played for teams and players due to the wet weather.

This will allow the MWFA to insert an extra full round of fixtures into the competition schedule before the semi finals / grand finals, as well as catch up on a small number of washed out games that have left some competitions with partial wash outs.

Key dates are now:

  • Saturday 24 August       Final round of matches (Mixed U6-U11s)
  • Saturday 24 August       Men’s Semi Final Day
  • Saturday 24 August       Mixed Junior Grand Final Day (U12s to U21s)
  • Sunday 25 August          Final round of matches (W7s-W11s)
  • Sunday 25 August          Girls/Women’s Semi Finals

  • Saturday 31 August       Men’s Grand Final Day
  • Sunday 1 September    Girls/Women Grand Final Day

“The MWFA would like to thank Northern Beaches Council staff for their understanding in extending the season by a week,” said MWFA CEO David Mason. “We understand this has some impact on the changeover period between winter and summer, but we’d like to acknowledge the collaborative approach that has been taken to ensure our 20,000 players can add another week to the season.

“We would also like to thank our players for their patience and understanding as we battle through the wet weather that is causing disruption to the 2024 season.”
