John Tansley wins Football NSW State Award

MWFA · Oct 30, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Manly Warringah Football Association would like to congratulate John Tansley on being named as a recipient of a State Award at the 2024 Football NSW State Dinner.

John Tansley is a true champion of the Manly Warringah Football Association community. Over the last 20 years, John has not only played a huge part in the operations of Beacon Hill Football Club (now Allambie Beacon Hill United), but he has also played a leading role in the MWFA’s Defib and Football4All programs.

He joined Beacon Hill as a football player in 2004 and the following year stepped up to build the club’s Over 35 teams, to the point where they are now a leader in the Over 35 space. Four years later, he officially joined the Beacon Hill Committee as the Over 35 coordinator, although he had been doing the role without the recognition. He continued to drive that part of Beacon Hill Football Club in the years to follow.

John’s community spirit was also a driving factor in starting and running off-season and pre-season six-a-side competitions, charity days and community days to raise money for the club. If there is a football social function being held, John will find a way to raise funds from it for charity. John also took on the much-needed but hard-to-find grounds coordinator role for five years at Beacon Hill Football Club, opening up and packing down the fields.

While his work with Beacon Hill was substantial, it is in the MWFA’s Defib and Football4All programs where he has gone above and beyond.

John played a lead role in forming a group that drove the Defib program, making MWFA a leader in this area for the past 10 years. Along with the assistance of others, John and his team drove the program, including the birth of the MWFA Defib Cup. It is still going strongly today and widely regarded as the best Defib program in NSW.

On top of that, John was a driving force in the MWFA’s Football4All program at Cromer Park through a partnership with Active Opportunities, where he and an army of volunteer coaches spend every Saturday morning running a program for young football players with cerebral palsy and other related disabilities.

In 2017, John was awarded the MWFA Meritorious Service Award for his work with Beacon Hill Football Club and the Manly Warringah Football Association.

John is a respected and highly regarded member of the Manly Warringah Football Association and we are proud to see him named as a recipient of a Football NSW State Award.

Vicki Halpin Appointed as MWFA CEO

MWFA · Oct 1, 2024 · Leave a Comment

The Boards of the Manly Warringah Football Association (MWFA) and Manly United Football Club (MUFC) are delighted to announce the appointment of Vicki Halpin as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Vicki has extensive leadership experience in business & marketing strategy, project management, branding, stakeholder & people management, media relations, sponsorship, and events.  A Northern Beaches local, Vicki has had a 24 year career with the multinational firm Lendlease.  Her sponsorship experience extends to working with organisations such as Surf Life Saving Australia, GWS Giants, and the NSW Women’s cricket team.

MWFA Chairman David Wilson said:

“The MWFA and MUFC Boards are thrilled that Vicki has agreed to join the organisation and helped to cement the recent growth across all levels of the game on the Northern Beaches, particularly given that the MWFA now has more than 20,000 participants and is the largest association in Football NSW.”

The interview process identified many candidates that would have been outstanding CEOs, but Vicki’s blend of significant corporate knowledge, experience, and passion for football, including as a committee member at Narrabeen FC, made her selection as CEO the obvious choice.

With the recent growth in the sport, particularly in women’s football, and the ongoing evolution of the MUFC elite pathway programs, we are in an exciting period for football on the Northern Beaches.  The MWFA and MUFC have recently commenced the development of a new strategic plan to ensure our football ecosystem continues to evolve as the most successful and cohesive in NSW.  We believe Vicki is the perfect fit to guide football on the Northern Beaches through this next important phase.

MUFC President Ray Fanning noted:

“Vicki’s appointment provides a significant step forward for MUFC and the MWFA as we look to take this club and football in this area to the next level.  Vicki’s extensive experience in leadership, marketing, and brand awareness during her time at Lendlease will provide both entities the opportunity to realise the full value associated with their brands.”

Vicki will join MWFA and MUFC on 4 October 2024.  Vicki stated:

“It is an honour to join the MWFA and MUFC as CEO, and I look forward to meeting all the key football stakeholders to ensure the ongoing growth and development of football on the Northern Beaches.

I look forward to working with the MWFA & MUFC Boards, staff, volunteers, and local clubs, to serve the 20,000 plus registered players, and build on the structure & support in place to develop & improve the football experience for all participants.”

More Than 900 Coaches Supported in 2024 So Far

MWFA · Sep 18, 2024 · Leave a Comment

The 2024 season was another very successful year for Coach Development in MWFA, with more than 900 coaches supported across a variety of coaching courses and workshops, as well as training session and match visits. Overall, 15% of coaches supported through courses and mentoring were females.

This total does include a number of repeat customers, however this is also an indication of the positive experience that coaches have had when attending our courses, and the ongoing value they provide. Similarly, more than 30 coaches from outside of the Northern Beaches travelled to take advantage of the opportunity to attend our Coach Development events.

797 coaches in total attended 12 x MiniRoos courses, 3 x Foundation of Football courses, 9 x Coach Workshops, 6 x Game Leader workshops, 2 x club based coach meetings and 1 x C-Diploma.

Despite many weeks of washed out training sessions and matches, we were still able to support 116 coaches through personalised mentoring with their actual teams in their own environments, which is the most effective way to help them learn ‘on the job’.

The combined total is not as many as our record season in 2023 where we supported over 1,000 coaches, but we will likely reach a similar number once 2 further Coach Workshops, another C-Diploma and the Future Coaches Program, all scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, are added in. This is largely due to the high number of dates made available across different clubs and spread out across the entire season, providing plenty of follow up development opportunities to encourage long term learning.

MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz was obviously very satisfied with this outcome, after a very busy but productive year despite the challenges with the weather.

“It’s been a complicated season, but I’m very happy with the overall result. Credit to all of the coaches who develop themselves for the sake of their players, especially those who’ve come back more than once. Most importantly, although there is still plenty of work to do, every year we are seeing an increasing number of players having a positive experience in the sport, with more engaging and game-realistic training sessions, and player-centered coaching. I would like to express my thanks to all of the clubs who hosted and helped promote all of our events this season, as well as acknowledge the hard work and quality of support that was provided to coaches by my team, in particular the Coach Mentors who made a big effort to be available as often as they did: Gregor Agic, Marilinda Winter, James Mitchell, Catriona Ormond, Sai van Wegen, Patty Faria and Gareth Banks.”

The MWFA Coach Development team would like to wish every player, coach, club volunteer and parent a safe and happy holidays, and we look forward to seeing more quality football in 2025.

2024 Future Coaches Program Applications Open Now

MWFA · Sep 12, 2024 · Leave a Comment

Do you wish you had a mentor to help you develop as a coach, but finding someone willing and able (and available) is difficult?
Do you want more regular opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills beyond the occasional courses and workshops on offer?
And are you motivated to push yourself as a coach as far as you possibly can, and not afraid to be challenged?

MWFA is pleased to announce that applications for our Future Coaches Program in 2024 are now open.

This is a 10-week intensive mentoring program designed to identify, develop and reward aspiring football coaches within MWFA, whether they have ambitions to progress to higher levels, or simply want to be the best coaches they can be.

All sessions will take place on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm at Cromer Park on the following dates.

October 16, 23 and 30
November 6, 13, 20 and 27
December 4, 11 and 18

Additionally, special guest mentors and experienced coaches will be invited to join these sessions to share their feedback and advice, and other optional sessions with a practical focus will be offered on top of the core dates. There is also the potential for coaches in this program to gain paid coaching opportunities with MWFA, MWFA clubs and/or Manly United.

The program will cover content relevant to the participants, including potential areas such as training sessions, match day coaching, video analysis, periodisation, leadership, man management and personal development.

This will be a very intensive and challenging program where participants will be expected to show a high level of commitment and push each other to raise the bar as high as possible. 100% attendance is required and punctuality will also be important – coaches who cannot lead by example are not suitable for this program.

To express your interest, please fill in the application form here: https://manlyunited.wufoo.com/forms/mwfa-2024-future-coaches-program-applications/

Applications close on Sunday September 22.
