COACH WORKSHOP: CREATING AND SCORING MORE GOALS

  • What are ideal training exercises for working on attacking scenarios and finishing? 
  • How can you teach good technique and decision making within these exercises?
  • How can you also manage a wide range of skill levels within your squad?

 

All of these questions will be answered in MWFA’s upcoming Coach Workshops on Thursday May 25 at Careel Bay (Avalon) starting at 6pm, as well as Thursday June 1 at Lionel Watts (Wakehurst) starting at 6:30pm (both workshops are the same).

 

MWFA runs a large number of Coach Workshops at various clubs during the winter season. These coach education opportunities compliment official FA coaching courses, with topics based on feedback received on what coaches would find valuable. Coaches can attend any and all of these workshops if they wish to, even if they are not a member of the club hosting them. Please ensure you arrive at least 10 minutes early to sign in so the workshops can start and finish on time. It would be appreciate if all participants can bring football boots (ideally) or runners, and appropriate clothing to play football in, just in case they are needed as players on the night.

Narrabeen Female Football Festival

On Sunday 28 May, the Narrabeen Female Football Festival will take place next to the canteen at Boondah Reserve, between 8am and 1pm.

There will be plenty of fun activities on the day for players, including:

  • a jumping castle
  • crazy hair
  • games on mini fields
  • Female Football Week merchandise from Football NSW
  • skill drills and fun football activities run by some of the older players

The canteen and BBQ will also be open, so if you’re in the area, make sure you head down to Boondah for what will be an enjoyable day!

Narrabeen FC Vice President and Senior Ladies Co-ordinator Vicki Halpin is excited about the club’s upcoming Festival and recognises the importance of highlighting girls’ and women’s football.

“With female player numbers growing across our club and across the MWFA, Female Football Week is the perfect time to celebrate all girls and women involved in football – from our players to volunteers.

“Narrabeen FC is a strong community club and this weekend we wanted to put a smile on the faces of the players and spectators that visit our Boondah fields. So, no matter what age you are, come along, enjoy a sausage sandwich, get some crazy hair and have a kick around to celebrate all the wonderful women in our great game.”

MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 11 PREVIEW

After Men’s Premier League Round 11 is completed, we’ll be at the halfway stage of the season! The race for the top four is heating up nicely and Saturday afternoon provides another chance for teams to improve their league position.

Last weekend, fourth placed Mosman ended a three game losing streak with victory in a high-scoring thriller. They travel to Grahams Reserve for a meeting with Brookvale, who are aiming to close the gap to the top four.

Pittwater RSL have won their last five games (three in the league and two Challenge Cup fixtures) to position themselves nicely in third place. However, Wakehurst are a tough opponent and will have plenty of motivation as they search for a return to winning ways.

The top two are both at home on Saturday. League leaders CC Strikers host Manly Vale in an intriguing matchup at St Matthews Farm Reserve – Vale have found form with victories in their last two games. Meanwhile, Narrabeen lead the chasing pack and will be looking to extend their winning run against BTH Raiders at Narrabeen High.

Finally, Beacon Hill are outside the top four but only three points off second place. They’ll be hoping that home field advantage will propel them to success against a St Augustine’s side trying to bounce back from defeat in Round 10.

The action continues on Tuesday with the Men’s Challenge Cup Final! Pittwater knocked off league leaders CC Strikers in the semi-final, while Narrabeen booked their place in the Final after a thrilling penalty shootout win over Mosman. Best of luck to both teams.

Avalon Fundraising Night on June 3rd

On Saturday June 3rd, there will be an Avalon fundraising night for their W16 team, who are touring Vanuatu to highlight local women’s football, assist in the cyclone recovery effort and provide charitable donations.

Avalon Soccer Club’s annual tour to Vanuatu started in 2012 as a mission to promote women’s sport on the islands, with the tour running successfully for eight seasons before COVID unfortunately brought it to a halt. The Avalon W16 team are now re-establishing this wonderful initiative and the 2023 tour starts on June 30th. They will play a number of matches – including two against the Vanuatu Under-16 national team – plus coaching clinics, school visits and donation deliveries.

Avalon’s fundraising night has a Tropical Party theme and will take place at Avalon Surf Club, from 7pm – 11pm. Entry includes free food from Alfonso Pizza and Paella, live music from local bands, a DJ, a lucky door prize, a free welcome drink and a very special football panel being assembled for the evening! There will also be an online raffle with $5,000 worth of prizes available.

Save Active Kids

Dear MWFA parents and players,

With the change of NSW Government, there is a looming challenge in terms of keeping the Active Kids Voucher program, which allows all families to claim $100 back on sports registration for school aged kids – once during the winter season and once during the summer season.

I had a chance to meet all four NSW Government Members of Parliament who represent the Northern Beaches (Michael Regan – Wakehurst, Matt Cross – Davidson, Rory Amon – Pittwater and James Griffin – Manly) during the week. They are supportive of the cause and are actively advocating to keep the Active Kids program in place.

The below petition has been set up to support this cause. Each signature increases the chances of the $100 Active Kids Vouchers program being retained.

MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 10 PREVIEW

League leaders CC Strikers have the bye in Men’s Premier League Round 10, which gives the chasing pack a great opportunity to reduce the six point gap at the top of the table. There will be plenty of exciting fixtures on Saturday and we’re set for another exciting round!

Fourth placed Pittwater RSL are coming off Challenge Cup semi final success during the week, now they have another big game against third placed Beacon Hill. Only one point separates these sides on the ladder and both teams know they could go as high as second place with three points at Kitchener Park.

There is also a one point gap between fifth placed Mosman and sixth placed Wakehurst. Mosman will be looking to bounce back from Tuesday’s Challenge Cup semi-final heartbreak, but Wakehurst are sure to be a tough opponent after three wins and a draw in their last four games.

Narrabeen have had a great week: they jumped into second place after last weekend’s win, and then Narrabeen progressed to the Challenge Cup Final after winning their semi-final on penalties. Their next opponents are St Augustine’s, who will be looking for a return to winning ways after losing a high scoring game in Round 9.

Manly Vale are feeling good after earning their first win of 2023 on Saturday, and now they face a BTH Raiders side who will be fresh after having the bye weekend. Finally, Harbord will be hoping that home field advantage can propel them to their first victory of the year – they take on Brookvale, who are looking to atone for last weekend’s heavy defeat.

COACH WORKSHOP: INVOLVING / INCLUDING GOALKEEPERS

  • What is the best way to involve and include goalkeepers in your regular team training sessions?
  • Is there any difference working with full-time goalkeepers compared to outfielders who are just performing the role for their team’s upcoming game e.g. in MiniRoos, or teams that don’t have a goalkeeper?
  • Are there some basic goalkeeping tips for various scenarios in a game that even team coaches should know and can share with their goalkeepers?

Harbord FC will #PlayInPurple this July, will you?

This season, Harbord Football Club will be playing passionately in purple socks to support the annual #PlayinPurple campaign for pancreatic cancer.

Football NSW, Manly Warringah Football Association and clubs across the peninsula get behind #PlayinPurple. This campaign helps PanKind, The Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, Australia’s third biggest cancer killer.

PanKind CEO Michelle Stewart said, “We are excited to see football fields on the peninsula turned purple again for pancreatic cancer. Awareness on this scale is exactly what we need to help shine a light on this disease and we can’t thank clubs in the MWFA enough for their ongoing support each year. It is truly special.”

England continued, “In addition to helping a great cause, you get some really good quality socks which are great for training, so it’s a win-win! We’ll update with more information, but I’d encourage teams to organise early and be sure they don’t miss out.”

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 6 PREVIEW

After a break in the competition due to Football NSW State Cup games, we’re getting ready for MWFA Women’s Premier League Round 6. Some teams used last weekend to rest and others recorded important Cup wins, who will come out on top this Sunday?

There’s a top four clash in Allambie Heights as third placed Manly Vale host fourth placed Wakehurst. Both teams know they could move as high as second with victory, and they both won in Round 1 of the State Cup, so there will be plenty of confident players at David Thomas Reserve.

At Seaforth Oval, we’ll see two teams coming off Cup victories. League front runners Seaforth won big in Round 1 of the Sapphire Cup, while Pittwater RSL knocked Sydney University out of the State Cup – all things point to an intriguing game.

The competition’s joint-highest scorers are set to do battle at Beacon Hill Reserve, so we could see plenty of goals! Beacon Hill (currently in second) and Manly Allambie have scored nine goals each in the opening four rounds, and only three points separate these two sides so there will be plenty on the line.

Finally, Curl Curl meet Brookvale at Abbott Road. These teams are looking to rebound from State Cup defeats on the weekend, and they both know that victory will see them climb the ladder.

There will also be two MWFA teams participating in Round 3 of the Sapphire Cup. Brookvale host Woonona Sharks from Football South Coast at Cromer Park, and Seaforth travel west for a clash with FNSW League One Women’s side Mt Druitt Town Rangers at Popondetta Park. Both games kick off at 7:30pm on Wednesday 17 May.
