“THE GAME AND THE COACH ARE THE TEACHERS, BUT DRILLS ARE NOT”

MWFA · Oct 19, 2023 · Leave a Comment

MWFA recently ran a series of interactive and special workshops for coaches interested in where the future of football is heading, especially in youth development. There are people’s opinions, and there is logical debate, but sometimes even these are not enough for some people to be convinced. To resolve this dilemma, we conducted some football ‘experiments’ to prove how certain things should be approached using actual grassroots players, factual data and first hand experiences.

In this first workshop, the theme was: “THE GAME AND THE COACH IS THE TEACHER, BUT DRILLS ARE NOT”.

We had several groups, some being taught certain skills (passing or first touch) in a typical drill based sessions, game-like sessions and/or purely game-based sessions. Each session finished with a free 4v4 game to see how the learnings from earlier exercises would transfer into the most match realistic scenario.

The different types of training sessions were structured as follows:

  • Drill-based included isolated and/or static passing exercises in straight lines or pre-determined routines
  • Game-like included exercises with goals, space, opponents and teammates etc such as passing and moving freely, and 4v1/5v3 etc
  • Game-based included various 4v4 exercises with different scoring systems, or variations with different numbers e.g. 2 games of 2v2 or 3v3 with 2 neutral players

We measured the following stats for players in each group across all 3 components of each session:

  • Good first touches (moving into space)
  • Bad first touches (stopped it dead or lost control)
  • No first touches (could have but kicked it straight away and lost it)

OR

  • One-touch successful passes
  • Successful passes after taking one or more touches
  • Failed attempted passes

AS WELL AS:

  • Unprompted communication (asks for the ball, says “man-on” or “shoot” etc without being told to by the coach) in all sessions

We kept this experiment as objective and fair as possible by ensuring the following:

  • We used both younger (U8-U10) and older (U11-U13) players across each training format
  • Each group either participated in a drill-based session followed by a game-based one, or vice versa, or they did 2 x game-like sessions
  • Every session had the same number of players, the same duration and used the same set up of equipment and size
  • We had the same number of analysts watching each group in each session

Obviously, doing a longer term comparison would be better, but the results even from just one night were very insightful. Note that we were also able to calculate decision making opportunities by multiplying the number of total football actions per player by the number of decision making opportunities each exercise allowed for.

The raw data is shown in the following table:

What we can see is that the number of good passes and first touches was comparatively low in all game-based sessions (32.6 on average per player) compared to 76.3 in game-like sessions and 113.3 in drill based sessions. Obviously, isolated drills allow for higher repetition because they remove most or all other components of football to focus on those specific skills only. The number of bad first touches and passes was actually more even with game based having 30.1 per player, game-like 37 and drill-based 38.7.

Decision making opportunities were very different however. Game-based sessions allowed for 62.7 decisions per player on average, whereas game-like sessions had 150.3 decisions on average and drill-like sessions only had 23. Similar results were seen with unpromoted communication which was very low in drill-based sessions (average of 26 in total for all players in that entire session), whereas game-based was double at 51 for all players combined, and game-like was more than 7 times better at 188 for all players combined in that session. This means that although drill-based sessions allowed for higher repetition, they typically only allowed for repetition of a very small number of different actions with very few variables, whereas game-like and game-based sessions gave players a much wider variety of elements to be aware of and consider with each action they executed.

Conclusions / Reflections / Learnings:

  • The clear winner from the 3 different approaches is ‘game-based’ training because it ticks both boxes – a high level of repetition can be achieved at the same time as realism (communication and decision making), which might be seen as a fundamental shift from the typical approach of the past, but it is important to understand that learning football skills is very different to something like gymnastics or golf because every football action involves considering various other players and options, which makes every pass different because the situation is always different
  • Coaches should only resort to using drill-based exercises if they believe a player really needs to be able to focus on developing a specific skill they are struggling with, however be aware that this means you will slow down their development of communication and decision making – it is interesting to reflect on how much value we have placed on these aspects historically compared to technical qualities, because although strong technique is vital, if too much training is done in isolation, you cannot develop into a world-class communicator and decision maker, and perhaps this is something we need to get better at in this country
  • Players can (and the more motivated ones should if they want to reach the highest level) also work on their technique in isolation at home against a wall for example, or at the park with friends, without this needing to take away a significant chunk of time from team training, because players also need to spend more time playing the game (to develop communication and decision making) given street football is not as popular as it used to be 20 years ago – coaches should also reflect on if the isolated drills they have used in the past were actually holding the players back because for the most part, they already could do technical work to a reasonable level in isolation, but actually needed to be challenged to execute it under pressure in more realistic scenarios (maybe even beginners can do more than you think they can)

MWFA would like to thank all of the players and coaches who participated in these workshops for their time and efforts.

MWFA Coaches Supporting Women’s Football in Armenia

MWFA · Oct 12, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Kris Korkian has coached within MWFA for several years, and attended several coaching courses including the C-Licence and Future Coaches Program in 2019 and 2020. Despite being a successful businessman, Kris wanted to invest in something more meaningful and leave a legacy of some kind. He decided to help develop women’s football back in Armenia where his origins are, because he feels it is very far behind the rest of the world.

“I want to encourage girls from a young age to play football, and to let the whole country know and understand that girls can and should be encouraged to play. It is not just for men or boys. We have to provide them with facilities, but it starts with just the simple things: giving each of them a ball, and teaching the coaches that above everything else, they need to make sure the players have fun and it is not something forced upon them.”

Kris believes it was his two daughters that inspired this project, with his younger one currenty playing for Wakehurst. Although he has coached men’s teams in the past as well, when he started coaching his older daughter’s team at U9s a few years ago, he could see how rewarding it is to teach something to young kids.

“When I saw how easy it is to help the players develop their skills when you apply the right methods that are suited to their age group, it made me realise that if it can be done in Australia, it can be done anywhere in the world. Of course, we have the Matildas here as role models and inspiration for young players, but in many other countries the response is often ‘this won’t work’. I’ve been in business for a long time and it actually makes me want to try harder if someone says it cannot be done.”

When Kris visited Armenia a few years ago, it seemed as though no one cared about women’s football.

“When I went there, it was sad. They say ‘why bother, football is not for women’, stuff like that, but they’re missing the point. There is a bigger picture of what football can do. There needs to be an opportunity to play, for example in schools. There needs to be a starting point at least.”

The first thing Kris did was take hundreds of footballs with him every time he travelled there. Next, he needed to find coaches, most of whom ended up being teachers, although he still feels it’s still important to help them understand that the most important thing is for the girls to continue playing without too much expectation or pressure so they want to keep coming back. This is where MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz comes in.

“Obviously I’ve attended a lot of courses with Eugene and I’ve seen how good he is with getting new ideas into people’s heads, whether that is players or coaches, even just within one session. This is often with coaches or players who haven’t even met him before as well. So I wanted to get him in to work with our coaches and 200 players we have so far. I’m confident they can become the best coaches in Armenia under Eugene’s guidance, so I am also inviting coaches from outside of my program to participate if they want to. The more the better.”

Kris believes that within five to seven years, they will start seeing a difference across the country.

“Three years ago there was nothing here, but countries who started building something 20 or 30 years ago are now in the top 10 or 20 in the world rankings. Armenia is currently ranked 52 out of 53 in Europe. Even countries where religion is a barrier like Saudi Arabia are investing in women’s football. Look at how well the Philippines did in the recent World Cup after bringing in an expert to help take them to the next level. So I believe we can do something really special here.”

Kris and his wife Taleen are funding this project out of their own pockets. If any clubs, organisations or individuals would like to make donations of any sort (balls, shoes, shinpads, coaching equipment, etc), they can reach our directly to Kris by email at krisko11@live.com.au.

Sienna Dale: The Future’s Bright

MWFA · Oct 6, 2023 · Leave a Comment

2023 has been a brilliant year for Sienna Dale. The Wakehurst junior has broken into the Manly United 1st Grade squad, made her national team debut with the Junior Matildas, and recently been named as a winner of this year’s Lucas Neill Award.

We spoke to Justin, Sienna’s father, about her footballing journey up to this point and what the future may hold. Sienna was understandably thrilled to be receiving an award.

“It’s just a testament of all the hard work that she’s put in and the guidance she’s gotten from the club. The good thing is she knew who the past winners were, Vali Bradley and Alice Thompson, who she used to play with.”

At the start of the year, Sienna wasn’t expecting to play 1st Grade football. However, with the support of the coaching staff and senior players, she settled in nicely.

“I think initially she just thought she’d play Reserve Grade and train with the 1st Grade squad. However, the support she got from Tom (Hopley), Lachie (Panetta) and Shaz (Egger) was amazing, and from the senior group as well.

“If we had any questions and we needed guidance from Tom and Shaz, we could call them or arrange a time (to meet).

“She wanted to highlight Pommie (Caitlin Jarvie), Ruby (Jackson) and Phoebe (Gilbane), who really took her under their wing. Sienna said she really felt it helped her soccer, because by training week in and week out with these players with W-League experience and some overseas experience, it gave her a lot of confidence.”

When speaking to Justin, it was clear that Sienna loves playing in the northern beaches and is glad she can set an example for the club’s youth league players.

“As a parent, I love the fact she’s shown a pathway for the younger ones coming through the grades, you can play for Manly and represent the area.

“The last thing that we wanted Sienna to do was sit in the car four days a week to head out to, you know, using Parklea as an example (where Football NSW Institute play and train), to play with a bunch of players that she had no history with. Then you turn 18, to then try to come back into the Manly system, that makes it really hard. Trying to balance that with your education, with your HSC coming up, it just didn’t make any sense for us.”

Sienna’s performances for Manly United attracted the attention of the Junior Matildas setup and in September she played a starring role as Australia qualified for next year’s Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup. Not content with a match-winning double when Australia beat Vietnam 2-1, Sienna then scored all four goals as Australia beat Bangladesh 4-0.

Apart from experiencing on-field success, Sienna also enjoyed the off-field aspect of national team duty.

“I think that came about from an injury she had last year where she thought ‘oh wow, one injury and it could all end’, so now she really enjoys where she travels. This year, for example, she’s gone to Mongolia, she’s gone to South Korea, now she’s in Vietnam. She gets to experience all the culture of those countries as well.”

Justin has also relished the opportunity to travel, and during the recent trip to Vietnam he, along with other Junior Matildas parents, took the initiative to show their support.

“We all went to a shop and we got these Australian jerseys made up. We’ve been told they’re 100% genuinely fake, they cost about $2 to make. I think the players have really appreciated it and it’s been nice meeting some other parents from around Australia as well.”

Sienna’s footballing prospects are certainly bright. With the way women’s football is growing, Justin is optimistic not just for her, but for all the young women playing football around the country.

“Sienna has got an idea that she’d like to go to the US college system, but a lot can change in two years because the profile of soccer globally has changed dramatically since the World Cup, with pathways to the US and straight to Europe, Asia, etc. There’s so much opportunity in football for young women in Australia at the moment, which is awesome.”

MWFA Supports Over 1,000 Coaches in 2023

MWFA · Oct 5, 2023 · Leave a Comment

The 2023 season was a record year for Coach Development in MWFA, with 1,023 coaches supported across a variety of coaching courses and workshops, as well as training session and match visits.

This total does include a number of repeat customers, however this is also an indication of the positive experience that coaches have had when attending our courses, and the ongoing value they provide. Similarly, more than 70 coaches from outside of the Northern Beaches travelled to take advantage of the opportunity to attend our Coach Development events.

830 coaches in total attended 12 x MiniRoos courses, 5 x Skill and Game Training courses, 16 x Coach Workshops, 6 x Game Leader workshops, 2 x club based coach meetings and 1 x C-Licence. This is the highest number ever achieved in our association, largely due to the high number of dates made available across different clubs and spread out across the entire season, providing plenty of follow up development opportunities to encourage long term learning.

We also doubled the number of training session and match visits compared to last season (200 in total) where coaches were provided with personalised mentoring with their actual team at their actual training session or game, which is the most effective way to help them learn ‘on the job’. Overall, 21% of coaches supported through courses and mentoring were females, which is also the highest percentage we’ve ever seen.

MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz was obviously very satisfied with this outcome, after a very busy but productive year.

“It’s great to see so many coaches keen to develop themselves for the sake of their players, and credit to all of them, especially those who’ve come back more than once. Slowly but surely, we are starting to see a difference being made with more players having a positive experience in the sport, with more engaging and game-realistic training sessions, and player-centered coaching. I would like to also express my thanks to all of the clubs who hosted and helped promote all of our events this season, as well as acknowledge the hard work and quality of support that was provided to coaches by my team, in particular the Coach Mentors: Gregor Agic, Marilinda Winter, James Mitchell, Sai van Wegen, Catriona Ormond, Nina Sallenave and Patty Faria.”

MWFA's Coach Development team for 2023.

The MWFA Coach Development team would like to wish every player, coach, club volunteer and parent a safe and happy holidays, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2024.
