MWFA women's Premier League grand final review

WAKEHURST completed a six year journey after winning the MWFA Premier League women’s grand final on Sunday afternoon.

A late goal from Sara Page sent the contest into a sudden death penalty shoot out versus Manly Vale, who went up 1-0 just before halftime thanks to a cracking strike from Grace Tyreman.

Teenager Rebecca Mackie slotted home the decisive effort from the spot to seal the silverware for the Tigers.

“I thought in the second half we were quite commanding, Manly Vale were better early on,” Wakehurst coach Donna Stuart said.

“Penalties is a very tough way to lose, it really is a lottery.

“To end up winning was huge for the club, we had plenty of local juniors on the team sheet.

“Some of the girls were playing when we lost games 6-0 and 8-0 back in the day, so I’m really happy for them.”

Wakehurst also won their semi-final on penalties against Manly Allambie.

“We did practice them at training, and it paid off,” Stuart said.

“Our goalkeeper Shannon Heath was also outstanding.”

Sunday’s triumph capped off a huge weekend for Wakehurst, who are the 2018 women’s and men’s knockout champions.

Pittwater RSL FC won the women’s AL/1s decider 2-1 over Beacon Hill.
