MWFA Proud to Support Shoosh for Kids

MWFA · Apr 28, 2022 · Leave a Comment

The MWFA is proud to support and participate in the Shoosh for Kids campaign once again this year, which will be running over the month of May.

Shoosh for Kids is an annual campaign run by the NSW Government, which aims to encourage positive spectator behaviour at junior sport whilst creating a fun and positive environment that keeps kids coming back to sport.

The campaign is not about staying completely silent but rather making sure everyone stays positive.

The six key messages of Shoosh for Kids are:

  • Think before you speak
  • Encouraging positive spectator behaviour
  • Keep it positive. Keep it fun.
  • Let coaches do the coaching.
  • Remember, volunteers run kids sport.
  • Respect the referee

Challenge Cup Catch Up

MWFA · Apr 28, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Tuesday and Wednesday night saw some great football action as our men and women competed in the annual Challenge Cup competition.

The men’s competition kicked off on Tuesday with their first round whilst the women battled to win their quarter final games last night.

This year, 16 men’s teams have accepted the challenge and after many tight contests on a rainy Tuesday night only eight teams remain.

Two games came down to penalty shootouts after Curl Curl and St Augustine’s finished the 90 minutes with a one all draw, and Narrabeen and Pittwater were even with two goals apiece.

After successful shoot outs St Augustine’s and Pittwater will join the other victors in the quarter finals on the cup.

BTH knocked out the winter season leaders, CC Strikers, in a 3-0 victory to progress to the second round.  Whilst Wakehurst took revenge against Mosman after a 1-0 loss in the winter season, defeating them 5-1.

Beacon Hill, Brookvale, Forest Killarney and Harbord all prevented the four AL1 teams from their chance of raising the cup and have made the remainder of the competition a Premier League event.

Wednesday night saw more Challenge Cup action as the women entered their quarter final stage.

Lionel Watts and Melwood hosted the four matches to determine who the semi finalist would be.

Mosman WPL dominated Avalon WAL1 with a 7-1 victory whilst Manly Allambie WPL secured their place in the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Forest Killarney.

Over at Lionel Watts a fierce rivalry took place between Wakehurst WPL and BTH WPL.

Only three days earlier the same local derby took place in the winter season with BTH having their first win with a 3-0 victory over their neighbour.

Last night was a chance for Wakehurst to avenge themselves, however it unfortunately slipped through their hands.

A tough competition saw the match end in a one all draw and sent to penalties where BTH once again reigned champions with a 4-3 result.

On the field over, Seaforth WPL took on Curl Curl WAL1’s.

With the score sitting at one all with 15 minutes to go the chance of another shootout was high. However, it will be Seaforth who continue through after finishing the game with a 2-1 lead.

The next Challenge Cup games will see more entertaining football as we go closer to naming our 2022 Challenge Cup champions.

MWFA Wet Weather Procedures

MWFA · Apr 28, 2022 · Leave a Comment

The 2022 season has started with wet weather that has seen disruptions to all walks of life but more specifically to the preparations and availability of fields for our matches.

As with previous seasons when we have wet weather we will endeavour to catch up as many matches as possible using wet weather weekends and the possibility of double headers and midweek matches.

While it is not possible for any of us to stop the rain and waterlogged fields, we share your frustrations and thought it appropriate to explain some of our procedures and factors that shape the decisions.

Step 1

Northern Beaches Council and Mosman Council inform the MWFA at 3pm on a Friday afternoon what fields are closed in the event of wet weather. This follows dialogue between Council Rangers and staff throughout the day to allow the MWFA staff to start preparing.

Step 2

The MWFA looks through the available grounds to maximise the number of matches that can be played across Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.

Changes are then made to the draws and notifications sent to players (through Dribl) and Clubs and the Referees.

Step 3

Clubs have the option to close grounds if they believe they are unfit for play and this does happen regularly.

If there is rain Friday night or across the weekend

As is often the case, rain can continue across a weekend. If we are expecting rain across the weekend (and rain does fall overnight) Council staff and Rangers will assess grounds in the early hours of the morning (Saturday and Sunday) to give the MWFA an updated list of fields that may be unavailable for play.

Once again in this instance the Clubs have the option to close fields if they feel they are unplayable.

Referee discretion

Ultimately the referee has the right and responsibility to postpone a match or abandon midway through if the field becomes dangerous or unfit for play.

MWFA process for deciding which games go ahead (Step 2)

The over-riding desire in deciding what games are played is to be fair across the season for as many teams and divisions as possible. It is also desirable to ensure the competitions with promotion and relegation can go ahead. That said, we postponed a round of the Men’s Premier League two weeks ago to allow other competitions to play games.

To be as fair as possible across the season, when we have fields made unavailable, we schedule entire competitions (E.g, the U12/3’s, the WU14/1’s or the AL4’s) so we retain balanced competitions and allows us to better keep track of what teams and competitions have missed games.

It also ensures the following:

  • Track fairness when deciding which competitions play the next time it rains.
  • The ability to plan for those competitions that have scheduled wet weather weekends.
  • Referee availability is also a consideration

Simply leaving all games to play on fields they are allocated would create significant imbalance as some teams may miss multiple games while others may be lucky enough to play every week.

It would also severely disadvantage players at clubs whose field is more likely to be washed out and hand unfair advantages to clubs that play home games on synthetic fields.

Also bear in mind, that replaying games midweek has an impact on teams and clubs who must cancel training for those matches to be played.

This process has been refined over the last decade based on the experiences and feedback of players and clubs and gives us the best opportunity to be fair to as many teams and players as possible.

Please understand we share your frustration and are doing everything we can to get as many games played as possible.

MWFA Junior Scores First International Goal for Commbank Young Matildas

MWFA · Apr 7, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Kahli Johnson’s dreams came true last night when she played 90 minutes for The Commonwealth Bank Young Matildas and scored her first international goal in the 5-1 win over New Zealand at Deakin Stadium, Canberra.

The Dee Why FC, CC Strikers junior and current Manly United player took to the top of field as striker, a position she has not played in for two years, however this didn’t stop her from adding to the scorecard.

First half goals from Jynaya Dos Santos, Sarah Hunter and Daniela Galic saw the Aussies take a 3-1 lead into the break with Johnson and captain Sheridan Gallagher rounding out the scoring in the second half.

Australia started confidently and in the first minute Dos Santos forced a save from Kiwi goalkeeper Bri Edwards for an early corner.

The resulting corner saw the forward capitalise on the ball falling to her on the edge of the area with her strike finding the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line for the opening goal.

With the early lead, the CommBank Young Matildas took control of the match and in the 21st minute they doubled their advantage.

A loose New Zealand pass in the defensive zone found Daniela Galic with the midfielder working her way into the penalty area before being brought down.  Sydney FC’s Sarah Hunter stepped up to take the penalty and buried it confidently.

The 39th minute saw Galic hit the scoreboard as she was played in following a strong Gallagher tackle to dispossess Marisa va der Meer.  In space, Galic cut inside before striking to the far post past Edwards.

It wasn’t all Australia’s way in the opening half with New Zealand pulling back a goal just before the break thanks to a stunning long-range strike from Charlotte Lancaster.  However, the CommBank Young Matildas went in cruising at the interval with a 3-1 lead.

Leah Blayney’s side looked to start off the second half positively once again and they succeeded ten minutes after the whistle.

Kahli Johnson latched onto a long throw before turning into the penalty area.  A trailing leg from Kiwi Kate Taylor resulted in the Sydney FC midfielder going down in the box.  The 18 year old stepped up to convert her own penalty and struck beautifully into the top right hand corner.

4-1 up, the Aussies kept the pressure on and two minutes later had a fifth.  Hunter played through her Sky Blues teammate Johnson with the post denying her a quick-fire brace.  The rebounded ball fell to Gallagher only for her to be denied by goalkeeper Edwards.

Once again Australia took advantage of a resulting corner with Gallagher backheeling a brilliant goal through a crush of bodies in the six yard box.

Blayney made a host of changes as the second half progressed with several making their international debuts at the U20 level. The CommBank Young Matildas held onto their advantage in the latter stages to run out convincing 5-1 victors.

In the 81st minute Johnson was joined by a fellow MWFA and Manly junior Shay Hollman, who spent her youth football at Seaforth FC and Manly before joining Football NSW Institute.

Following the host of changes in the camp in recent days, head coach Leah Blayney was delighted with the resilience and adaptability of the group off the pitch, as much as the performance on it.

“It was an excellent night of football for the Young Matildas,” Blayney said.  “It was fantastic that Australian football was able to see a lot of future stars of our game in action.”

“During the past couple of days we have just stuck together as a group throughout the whole time, which was really, really helpful for us last night.   Every time they pressed, they pressed together, every time they went forward, they went forward together.  That has been a theme of the camp and something that they put together on the park.

“On the positives, it was great to have multiple goal scorers.  It was good to see that we were able to get to goal through a variety of ways, whether it was through or out wide.  The overall performance of a lot of young kids was pleasing with them all playing towards the one goal and that was last night’s game.

“I was proud of the belief that the group had in themselves and in each other.  You could see on the pitch that they would play a pass to a teammate and then they are looking to support them on and off the ball.  The belief is making a difference in this team.

“There’s definitely a few moments where I’d like to see us a little bit more cohesive.  This is in terms of the fluency of our passing and movement.  That’s the area I’d like to see improvement on as we go towards FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup™ in August.”

Australia will complete the series on Sunday afternoon at Viking Stadium following the CommBank Matildas Fan Open Day.  Kick off will be at 2.00pm.

Supporters can watch the Commonwealth Bank Young Matildas take on New Zealand for FREE with the match live streamed Football Australia’s My Football YouTube page.

Happy 75th Birthday Manly Warringah Football Association!

MWFA · Apr 6, 2022 · Leave a Comment

With the 2022 season having just kicked off we thought it was the perfect time to start celebrating our 75th Anniversary!

The Manly Warringah Football Association was born in 1947 as Manly Warringah Soccer Association (MWSA) and since then a lot has changed.

It all started with two men, F Adler and G Hudson, who founded the association with Adler as president and Hudson taking on the roles of secretary and treasurer.

Adler served as president of the association for three years whilst Hudson held the role of secretary for four years, creating and growing what has become Australia’s largest grassroots football association.

The first recorded figures of teams and players goes all the way back to 1949 when there were just 31 teams and 553 players in the MWSA.

Since then, the MWFA has only grown.

In 1972, the 25th anniversary of the association, it had grown by 300 teams! 331 teams and 4389 players took to the fields of the Northern Beaches for the 25th year of the MWSA.

As numbers grew the women of the Northern Beaches wanted in on the action and so in 1976 Manly-Warringah Ladies’ Soccer Association was formed. 10 years later, in 1986, it was finally time for the ladies to join the MWSA. 87 women under 13, 65 women U15 and 168 women all age players joined the association.

50 years of the MWFA, in 1997, saw the number of teams almost double from 1972, with 633 teams and 7778 players!

2005 saw the official name change from Manly Warringah Soccer Association to Manly Warringah Football Association.

Today as we celebrate our 75th anniversary the MWFA stands as the largest grassroots association in Australia with 1409 teams and 18,618 player and a total of 21, 037 members.

However, none of this would have been possible without the football clubs of the Northern Beaches which all hold their own rich history.

In 1947 at the birth of football on the beaches Dee Why Football Club was founded. Harbord Diggers Soccer Club was also founded in 1947/48 which later merged with Seasiders Soccer Club to form Harbord Seasiders United Football Club, which we now know as Harbord Football Club, in 2004.

Manly Soccer Club was next to come along in 1949 and has since merged with Allambie Soccer Club (founded 1963) in 1992 to create Manly Allambie United Football Club.

A few years later in 1951 Manly Vale Football Club joined the party, followed by Curl Curl Youth Club in 1958.

The 60’s was a busy time for our clubs with Beacon Hill FC, Brookvale FC, Forest Killarney FC, Mosman FC, Narrabeen FC, Pittwater RSL FC, Seaforth FC, St Augustines Soccer FC and Wakehurst FC all being founded.

Avalon Soccer Junior and Senior clubs merged in 1982 to create Avalon Soccer Club, whilst Belrose Rangers Soccer Club and Terry Hills Soccer Club merged in 1986 to become the BTH Raiders FC.

Lastly but certainly not least, our biggest club in the association, CC Strikers, joined the association after the merge of Cromer Strikers Soccer Club and Collaroy Plateau Youth Club in 1995, creating the 17-club association we see today.

With so much history it is no surprise the MWFA isn’t the only one celebrating milestone anniversaries this year.

Dee Why FC turn 75 this year whilst Forest Killarney and Brookvale (Manly Milan was founded in 1962 and changed to Brookvale FC in 1971) celebrate their 60th anniversaries.

It has been 40 years since Avalon Soccer Junior and Senior clubs merged and Manly Allambie will celebrate their 30 years of marriage together this year.

A rich history with many stories and memories. The MWFA are proud to have helped create the footballing community on the Northern Beaches alongside the incredible work of the clubs and their volunteers as we would not be celebrating 75 years without them.

Here’s to the past 75 years and to 75 more!
