CROMER PARK SET TO HOST 2023 STATE CUP FINALS

MWFA · Jul 10, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Cromer Park, home to the Manly Warringah Football Association, is set to host the 2023 Football NSW State Cup Finals across two massive days of quality community football on Saturday 15th of July and Sunday 16th.

Due to Valentine Sports Park being utilised by the French Women’s Football side as they prepare for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Cromer Park was selected to facilitate all 14 matches, Saturday hosting all the Girls and Women’s finals while Sunday sees the Boys and Men’s spectacle.

Age groups from the 13 Boys and Girls competitions up to the Over 35 Men and All Age Women will take shape.

Two age groups have been named after former administrators and football advocates who have assisted in the development of our game in NSW.

The U21 Men will be taking part in the Robertson Cup while the All Age Men will be playing for the Bill Cullinan Cup.

The Manly Warringah Football Association (MWFA) lead the way with nine clubs representing their respective area, an achievement MWFA Chief Executive Officer David Mason is very proud of, as well as being able to host this major grassroots event.

“The MWFA is thrilled to have nine local teams from seven local clubs in the 2023 Football NSW State Cup Finals this weekend.

“The State Cup and the Champion of Champions competitions give teams in grassroots football the chance to test themselves against teams from all over New South Wales and we would like to congratulate all our teams that have qualified for the finals.

“We are equally proud to be able to host the State Cup Finals this weekend at Cromer Park and hope all teams competing enjoy the facility and the thrill of Grand Final Day.”

There will also be club representatives from the Sutherland Shire FA (4), Northern Suburbs (3), Football Canterbury (3), Football South Coast (2), Eastern Suburbs (2), Football St George (2), Hills Football (1), Blacktown (1) and Nepean (1) in this memorable tournament.

Club wise, it will be a massive day for Sutherland Shire Football Association’s Cronulla Seagulls FC who will have the most team entrants with their 18 Men’s, 21 Men and All Age Men competing in the big dance.

Long serving Football NSW Competitions Coordinator Kim Burge, who will be running her 18th State Cup Finals, was eagerly anticipating grassroots football’s first major tournament for 2023.

“The State Cup traditionally displays all the hard work and efforts displayed by each entrant that took part in what traditionally has been one of the toughest tournaments to participate in NSW.

“Congratulations to each participant and their club and Association on reaching the final, it will no doubt be a fantastic day for everyone involved as Football continues to thrive as the most participated sport played in NSW.”

St Augustine’s Ladies Day 2023

MWFA · Jul 7, 2023 · Leave a Comment

On Saturday 15 July, the St Augustine’s Ladies Day will be held at Cromer Park. The day is held in parallel to the celebration of Helen Anglicas, who sadly lost her fight against breast cancer in 2016. All money raised on the day will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, who fund leading edge breast cancer research.

Many St Augustine’s teams from multiple age groups will play across Fields 2, 3 & 4 at Cromer Park, ensuring a great atmosphere as the club plays tribute to Helen. This event will run from 8:30am until 5:30pm, and in addition to the games there will be plenty for spectators to enjoy, with raffles and other competitions being run throughout the day.

Spectators are encouraged to wear pink and invite significant women in their life as the club seeks to celebrate the role women play in all aspects of our lives. At 3:00pm the Helen Anglicas Memorial Cup will be played on Cromer Park Field 2 between St Augustine’s and Brookvale, two clubs that Helen had a great impact on and that remember her fondly.

The sad truth is that eight Australian women lose their life to breast cancer every day. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is working to change this and has set a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. To help them, St Augustine’s have set a fundraising goal of $20,000 for this year’s Ladies Day.

You can donate to the fundraiser at the link below:

MWFA Coach Mentor: Catriona Ormond

MWFA · Jul 6, 2023 · Leave a Comment

For the 2023 season, MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz and several Coach Mentors have again been visiting MWFA clubs to support coaches at their training sessions with their teams, and occasionally matches too. This is to provide coaches with direct assistance ‘on the job’ as a compliment to the courses and workshops we offer, as well as provide ongoing learning opportunities in a realistic setting.

Training support and guidance is by far the most popular request from coaches in terms of what they feel would benefit them the most in their role, and these Coach Mentors will allow us to have a greater reach in terms of the number of coaches we can directly assist, as well as supporting CCCs (Club Coaching Coordinators) in their roles.

Catriona Ormond has played in MWFA since 2008, mostly with Wakehurst and more recently Seaforth. She initially started coaching after finishing High School, and then more recently fell back into it when her son’s U11 team didn’t have a coach.

These experiences piqued her curiosity to get more educated when it came to coaching, and so she started attending MWFA coaching courses to understand the modern coaching methods for youth development.

From there, Catriona started working in the Manly United Development program, firstly in the mixed side, before moving into the women’s program. She currently coaches a couple of teams at Seaforth and was a participant in MWFA’s Future Coaches Program, along with having completed her C- Licence.

Catriona is passionate about giving all females the opportunity to receive excellent football coaching. She’d like to encourage female coaches and coaches of females to develop themselves and educate themselves on how females might respond more to different coaching methods.

MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 17 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jul 5, 2023 · Leave a Comment

As we head into MWFA Men’s Premier League Round 17, you could throw a blanket over the top three teams … and you’ll probably need a blanket to stay warm in this weather! There are intriguing battles everywhere you look, so get set for another exciting round of MPL action.

Mosman have put some distance between themselves and the teams chasing a top four spot after two important wins in the last two weeks. They host CC Strikers at Middle Head Oval, and with Strikers leading the league on goal difference there will certainly be plenty on the line for both sides.

Second placed Narrabeen are looking to pounce on any slip up from Strikers so they can take top spot. Their next game is away to Brookvale – the Round 6 meeting between these two teams was a 0-0 draw, so we could see another tight contest at Grahams Reserve.

Pittwater are hot on the heels of the top two and coming off three consecutive wins. Up next for them is a home game against BTH Raiders and they have the chance for a league double over BTH, following on from a 1-0 win at Terrey Hills Oval in the first half of the season.

There’s an important game at Lionel Watts Oval as Wakehurst host St Augustine’s. Fifth placed Wakehurst need points to stay in the hunt for a finals place, while Saints are hovering just above the bottom two and are hoping to end a losing streak.

Beacon Hill are fresh off the bye weekend and will be confident because their last outing was a 1-0 win over league leaders CC Strikers. However, Harbord are undefeated in their last four games, so everything points to a fascinating encounter at Beacon Hill Reserve.

Men’s Premier League Round 17 Fixtures

Saturday 8 July, 3pm

Beacon Hill v Harbord, Beacon Hill Reserve Field 2
Brookvale v Narrabeen, Grahams Reserve Field 1
Pittwater RSL v BTH Raiders, Kitchener Park Field 1
Wakehurst v St Augustine’s, Lionel Watts Oval Field 4
Mosman v CC Strikers, Middle Head Oval Field 1

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 10 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jun 30, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Only two Women’s Premier League Round 10 games will be played on Sunday as the other two have been postponed due to clashes with the Football NSW State Cup semi-finals. This is a big chance for the teams involved in this weekend’s WPL action to climb the ladder.

Wakehurst can jump into the four with a point against Manly Allambie at Millers Reserve. However, the Challenge Cup Finalists are sure to be aiming for victory so they can put maximum pressure on Curl Curl, who currently occupy fourth place. Manly Allambie will be trying to end their winless run and they can take confidence from the previous meeting between the two teams, when they beat the Tigers 3-1.

At Kitchener Park, we’ll see two teams looking to bounce back from defeats in Round 9. Brookvale could move closer to the top four if they take all three points against Pittwater, but neither team is out of finals contention, so there will be plenty on the line when the teams take the field. In Round 3, Brookvale beat Pittwater 2-0 at Grahams Reserve.

We would also like to wish the best of luck to Beacon Hill and Seaforth ahead of their State Cup semi-finals.

Beacon Hill will face Northbridge (Northern Suburbs FA), and the WPL league leaders should take plenty of confidence into the game after scoring 17 times in their three previous State Cup fixtures, including a resounding 6-1 win over Dunbar Rovers in the quarter-finals.

Seaforth’s quarter-final victory was more dramatic – they needed a penalty shootout to defeat Manly Vale. Their semi-final opponent is Thirroul from Football South Coast, and Seaforth will be looking to add a State Cup triumph to their MWFA Challenge Cup victory from earlier in the season.

Both State Cup semi-finals are at Cromer Park on Sunday afternoon, providing a great opportunity for fans to attend and cheer them on!

MWFA Coach Mentor: Sai van Wegen

MWFA · Jun 29, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Sai van Wegen has played in MWFA competitions since the age of 5, mostly with Wakehurst. She started coaching as a teenager and then took it more seriously about 5 years ago when she took on a girls team with the Tigers.

She has since worked for various schools, Sydney FC’s development programs, FNSW state teams, as well as at NPL level including both Manly United’s boys and girls programs. She has also been a participant and mentor in MWFA’s Future Coaches Program for the last 4 years, and is currently completing her B-Licence.

Sai has also been delivering community coaching courses with MWFA since 2020.

She has a passion for developing female players and coaches, as she would like to help create more female role models and show there is a pathway to the higher levels of the game.

MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 16 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jun 28, 2023 · Leave a Comment

We’re coming off a weekend in which the top two suffered defeats, which shows how competitive this league has been in 2023. Men’s Premier League Round 16 is sure to heat up what will be another chilly Saturday afternoon.

Wakehurst are in the middle of an intriguing battle for top four spots and have won their last three games. Their next match is away to Narrabeen, who will be looking to do the double over the Tigers after a 3-1 win at Lionel Watts Oval in Round 5.

Harbord won big against BTH Raiders on the weekend and moved up to ninth place as a result. Up next for them is a meeting with league leaders CC Strikers at St Matthews Farm Reserve – Strikers know that defeat here will open the door for Narrabeen to take top spot.

Pittwater’s victory over Narrabeen in Round 15 means there is now a three horse race for the title, with only four points separating Strikers, Narrabeen and Pittwater. The 2023 Men’s Challenge Cup winners travel to Passmore Reserve for a game against St Augustine’s, with Saints needing points to stay out of the bottom two.

Last weekend, Mosman were triumphant in a seven goal thriller against Saints. Their fight for finals places continues at Terrey Hills Oval – opponents BTH Raiders will be trying to end a winless run.

Finally, Brookvale are coming off the bye weekend and are hoping to join the race for the top four. They face Manly Vale at David Thomas Reserve, with Vale unlikely to be short of motivation after last weekend’s results saw them drop into the bottom two.

Men’s Premier League Round 16 Fixtures

Saturday 1 July, 3pm

Manly Vale v Brookvale, David Thomas Reserve Field 2
Narrabeen v Wakehurst, Narrabeen High Field 1
St Augustine’s v Pittwater RSL, Passmore Reserve Field 2
CC Strikers v Harbord, St Matthews Farm Reserve Field 4

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 9 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jun 23, 2023 · Leave a Comment

We’re in the coldest time of the year, but the action is heating up as we head into MWFA Women’s Premier League Round 9! It’s tight in both the title race and the battle for semi final spots, so we can look forward to four fascinating games on Sunday afternoon.

There’s a huge game at David Thomas Reserve as third placed Manly Vale host league leaders Beacon Hill – only one point splits these two on the ladder. Vale were victorious on Wednesday against Curl Curl and know they will overtake Beacon Hill on the table with a win (they could even go top of the league), but Beacon Hill have scored ten goals in their last two games and haven’t been kept scoreless since Round 1.

Second placed Seaforth are the other team battling for the title, with only goal difference separating them from Beacon Hill. Their next game is away at fifth placed Brookvale, who could move into the top four if they take all three points. Both sides were victorious in their previous league fixture, so we’re set for a fascinating clash at Grahams Reserve.

Curl Curl will be trying to protect their top four spot when they take on Manly Allambie at Abbott Road. There should be plenty of motivation for both teams after they suffered defeats in the previous round. This is also the case for the game at Melwood Oval between Wakehurst (sixth) and Pittwater RSL (seventh) – both teams are looking for a win which will put pressure on the teams above them.

We would also like to congratulate Beacon Hill and Seaforth for their progression to the semi-finals of the Football NSW All Age Women’s State Cup. Both teams will play their State Cup semi-final at Cromer Park on Sunday 2 July, so it’s a good chance for the supporters to head down and cheer them as they look to make the State Cup Final!

Match Details – Women’s Premier League Round 9

Sunday 25 June, 3pm

Curl Curl v Manly Allambie, Abbott Road Field 5
Manly Vale v Beacon Hill, David Thomas Reserve Field 2
Brookvale v Seaforth, Grahams Reserve Field 1
