The MWFA Men’s Select team retained the MWFA /NSFA Select title last night with a 3-2 win against Northern Suburbs FA at Cromer Park, placing themselves in a strong position for their clash against Manly United at Cromer Park on 23 February.
The MWFA team secured their 8th consecutive win, but NSFA made it a tough battle, forcing the MWFA team to dig deep to keep the undefeated streak intact.
Only 3 minutes into the match Northern Suburbs’ Charlie Cox (West Pymble) fired into the top left corner from a tight angle after some sustained pressure from the visitors, giving NSFA an early lead.
After the early wake up call, MWFA worked their way back into the game and they levelled the scores with a goal from Aaron Peters (St Augustines). The goal came following a clever through ball from Luke Curnow (CC Strikers) which Peters picked up and slotted it under the keeper to score.
In the 37th MWFA got the upper hand after an NSFA player handled the ball in the box. Curnow stepped up to the spot to bring the score to 2-1.
As half time approached NSFA found their break with a through ball that saw the fast-paced Fergus Worrall (North Sydney United) get behind the MWFA defence and put one passed Luke Femia (Brookvale FC) to even the scores at the break.
Entering the second half at 2-2 the next 45 minutes would decide the winner.
With both sides having near misses the pressure continued to build before MWFA finally took the lead.
Ryan Chambers (Beacon Hill) was released in behind the NSFA defence before calmly placing the ball and sealing the victory for the MWFA.
The MWFA Men’s Select turn their focus to their next match against Manly United’s First Grade Men’s team on Wednesday 23 February at Cromer Park, at 7:30pm.
The following evening NSFA will be looking to even the score with a victory from their Women’s Select Team who take on the MWFA Women’s Select on Thursday 24 February at Cromer Park, kicking off at 7:30pm.
NSFA defeated the MWFA in the corresponding fixture last year so the Kyle Cannon-coached team will be looking for revenge.
