Manly United striker Harry McCarthy has been named in a 30-man Young Socceroos Squad for a training camp in Canberra from 28 July to 2 August with the possibility of boarding a plane to take part in the Asian Football Federation (AFF) U18 Championships in Vietnam.
McCarthy, who played his junior football with Wakehurst, is one of four players from NPL Clubs all around Australia selected in the extended squad, which will take part in a five day camp in Canberra under the watchful eye of Young Socceroos Head Coach Gary Van Egmond.
“This is a great opportunity for me and I cant wait to get into Camp”, McCarthy said.
Following the five day camp, 23 players from the extended squad will leave Australia to face Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Cambodia from August 7-15 with the hope of qualifying for the semi finals and final.
The camp and tournament is the first step for players hoping to gain ultimate selection in the Young Socceroos squad that will be striving to qualify for the next U20 World Cup, to be staged in the Korea Republic in 2021.
McCarthys selection is also a boost for Manly United after the teenager returned to the club from Sydney FC last month.
The talented teenager was a standout at Manly United during his youth and a 30-goal season in the Manly United U16s saw him move to Sydney FC but after 18 months he returned to Cromer park where he has been a part of the first grade side.
This is a fantastic recognition for Harry and highlights the talent that he has, said Manly United Technical Director Andrew Christiansen. To make a Young Socceroos camp is a wonderful achievement and were thrilled for Harry.
He has been back at Manly for a little over a month and it is refreshing that the National Team Coaching staff have selected players from the NPL.
It is a tremendous to know that players can gain selection in National teams from Manly and other NPL Clubs.
The next month represents an exciting opportunity for all the players that have been selected, van Egmond said. Our camp in Canberra combined with the 2019 AFF U-18 Championship in Vietnam represents the start of our process to qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2021.
