THE playing squad from St Augustine’s 13/1s defied chilly conditions in Canberra recently to win their age division of the Kanga Cup.
It was a fantastic effort given the knockout competition is the largest youth football tournament in the southern hemisphere.
Pool matches saw wins againstBelnorth FC (7-1), Monaro Panthers FC (8-0), the International Football School (6-2) and Tigers FC (4-2).
A draw with Balmain District (1-1) resulted in Saints being undefeated earlyon.
Next was a quarter-final versus theNorthern Tasmanian Junior Soccer Association team, who battled hard before Saints emerged triumphant 4-2.
Rouse Hill Rams FC awaited in the semi-final, with John Covich’s talented young team winning 3-1.
Shellharbour FC were the final hurdle, with Saints winning a thrilling penalty shoot out to secure the silverware after a pulsating 2-2 draw.
“To be the Kanga Cup Champions is a huge achievement for our young Saints boys,” Covich said.
“The trophy and their gold medals are a testament to the boys determination, teamwork and sportsmanship which showed in their supportive team spirit to the final whistle.”
Curl Curl’s under-9 shield team also returned to the peninsula with big smiles after winning their age group.
