5th May 2020 – Covid-19 update

5 May 2020

Dear MWFA Players,

The last few days have seen some exciting developments from the Federal Government in relation to the relaxation of the restrictions, with particular reference by Prime Minister Scott Morrison to the significant role community sport will play in Australias emergence from the COVID-19 environment.

The Federal Government has set some National Principles to help sports prepare for a return to training and playing, with the initial information suggesting a return to training as a first step and then a return to competitive matches.

The Federal Government release – https://www.pm.gov.au/media/update-coronavirus-measures-1may20

The process from here is as follows;

  1. The Federal Government has released principles and guidelines for sport to return in three stages (individual, small group training, full training/competition)
  2. Football (FFA, Football NSW and the MWFA) will absorb this information and put in place more specific guidelines that will be applicable to training and playing matches
  3. We will receive a state specific timeline for the roll out of these stages by the NSW Government

Over recent weeks the MWFA has been working with Football NSW and other Associations to ensure we are ready to go and have clear guidelines that will assist the MWFA and clubs to start training and then playing games in line with Health and Public Safety orders. These will be sent to all players and clubs in advance of the restart.

There is no doubt we are moving towards a return to football, which is exciting.

But, despite the positive developments, the Federal Government is adamant that sports and individuals need to respect the rules around the peeling back of restrictions as individuals, clubs and sports that overstep the mark will jeapordise our return and ability to continue playing football.

There was a recent episode at one of our sports fields where a group of people were playing a football game that was a blatant breach of the rules. Further repeats of such behaviour will see Police and Government reconsider our ability to peel back restrictions.

As we await a return to community sport, the Federal Government has been clear with its messaging around the need for as many people as possible to download the COVIDSafe App to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

The MWFA is supporting the government by encouraging the football community to download the App as it will not only allow the restrictions to ease but help state and territory health officials to quickly alert people who may be at risk of having contact with the virus as we start to return to normal activities.

We are expecting to receive further updates this week and have a meeting with all 17 Club Presidents on Monday night (May 11).

Regards
