Coach of the Week: Franz Baumann

MWFA · Jul 27, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Over the last few months, MWFA has been sending our Coach Mentors out to visit all of our clubs to provide coaches with guidance and support with their training sessions, as well as occasional match visits. During this time we have come across several examples of coaches who are doing a really great job.

This week we’d like to acknowledge Franz Baumann and Dimitri Aroney who coach the U8 Furry Fury at Forest Killarney.

See this video to check out some highlights of their recent training session, as well as some quick interviews with both coaches!

MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz said: “Franz and Dimitri collaborate really well together during their sessions and this is great to see. It allows them to split the players up into smaller groups for higher levels of participation and number of touches on the ball, as well as giving the players a mix of voices and perspectives guiding them. Managing a group of young children can be a challenge sometimes but these guys are always positive, keen to continue learning, and always looking to help their players improve their skills.”

Well done Franz and Dimitri, and keep up the good work!

As a reward and recognition for their efforts, we are also pleased to provide their team with a few special gifts:

  • extra training balls, because every coach wishes they had more balls to use so they can do exercises where every player has a ball each to work on their control
  • mini goals, because scoring into actual goals always makes training more fun, and finishing is a skill we should encourage players to develop ever more
  • a whiteboard, so coaches can help players understand their positions and how to support each other visually, which is much more effective than just using words

Over the next few weeks we will be highlighting some other coaches from different clubs, so make sure you stay tuned to our website to see who else will be MWFA Coach of the Week.

AVALON’S VANUATU TOUR IS A SUCCESS

MWFA · Jul 25, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Despite a number of travel challenges, Avalon’s W16 squad had a successful Vanuatu tour earlier in July, the club’s ninth since 2012.

The original nine day itinerary was cut back to seven after the group were bumped from their initial Air Vanuatu flight, and cut back further to four days after their rescheduled flight was cancelled due to the Sydney airport chaos last weekend.

However, despite the logistical challenges, the group still managed to spend an extremely productive few days on Etafe, with a number of community visits, football projects and even a little down time!

Arriving in the early hours of Thursday 6th July, the group grabbed a few hours sleep before reconvening at 7am and heading off to drive around the whole island on a donations drop. With 27 containers of goods donated by the public, the club and one of our sponsors Mike Pawley, and delivered to Port Vila courtesy of the IVE Group, it was a mammoth effort to organise and distribute in a short time frame.

The team visited the Lycee Francais School in Port Vila first, delivering dozens of brand new footballs along with school supplies to an excited group of children. Next up was the 45 minute drive to Port Havannah and a second drop at Tanoilu Primary School, followed by a short trip up the road to Ulei Junior Secondary School.

Here, the team were presented to the school students, and received gifts of beads, shells and leis. In exchange the group presented the school principal with a kit for their team, brand new balls and football boots, plus a number of water bottles and other school supplies.

The girls then headed out for an impromptu match against the very talented Ulei School team, in front of the rest of the school.

The team moved onto Ekipe and Le Life Resort where they met Tahnia Cook. Tahnia has been supporting the local community in Ekipe following the devastating March cyclones, and the team’s fundraising allowed the group to donate $7,000 to get a container of much needed building materials, homewares and school supplies over to the island, to assist with rebuilding the local village.

The team also dropped off donations for a school library before returning to Port Vila for their first match against the Vanuatu U16 national team.

Under the guise of coach Nesta Moli, the matches marked important preparation for the upcoming OFC U16 championships in Tahiti, with the players coming largely from Suango School and Erakor School.

The match, played in front of a boisterous crowd at Freshwater Stadium, was extremely competitive and played at a high tempo in humid and overcast conditions, with both sides testing the respective goalkeepers. Avalon had the better of the first half, and went ahead shortly before half time with a cool finish from Luella Williams after good work from Sophia Randall and Isobel Festa in the lead up.

The second half saw the hosts apply more pressure as fatigue began to set in for the visitors. Selina Wogis’ smart finish gave Vanuatu the equaliser early in the half, and they continued to push for a winner, but were denied thanks to excellent defending and a series of smart saves from Petra Van der Wallen.

Avalon remained dangerous on the break, but with the game seemingly set to be a draw, Ketura Iopa popped up with a winner for Vanuatu five minutes from time to seal the game.

The players came together post match, and were addressed by VFF Technical Director Pita Takaro, with the Avalon team gifted a Vanuatu key chain from their opposition players. Both sides then shared a meal in the grandstands, before a very weary Avalon group headed off for a well earned rest!

Friday 7th July was a day of activities including Ziplining, snorkelling and a trip to the Blue Lagoon, before the team once again headed to Freshwater Stadium for the second game of the tour against the national team. Coach Marino Festa rotated his 21 player squad in sweltering conditions, with temperatures nudging 32 degrees and both sides struggling to get a foothold in the first half. Amber Knights had the best chance for Avalon on the half hour mark, shooting wide.

Goalless at half time, the second half was much more open with both sides having a number of chances. Isobel Warren and Isobel Festa both saw chances for Avalon go just wide, while at the other end, Lucy Johns and Keira Brigstocke both made terrific last gasp tackles to deny the hosts. In the end the 0-0 draw was a fair result, and just reward for 90 minutes of effort from both teams.

Coach Festa was delighted with the performances. “Thanks to each and every one of the girls for the way they conducted themselves. They made Avalon proud and left a legacy for future years to continue to visit and to empower and promote women’s sport at all levels in Vanuatu.”

After a final team meal on Saturday 8th July, the team had an early night before a 3am alarm call to head back to the airport and a flight back to Sydney, after a whirlwind few days. Club Vice-President Stuart Randall was proud of the result of the tour.

“It was a huge logistical effort across the last ten months to get the tour up and running again after three years, with major challenges for us even in the last week! And while the tour didn’t last as long as planned, we ensured that the girls still had the best possible experience, and we were able to maximise our time on the ground to get as much done as possible.

“It was an amazing experience off the pitch to see the impact of our visit and our donations to the various schools and communities, and on the pitch, the girls were outstanding in both games. The conditions were not easy and Vanuatu extremely talented, so to achieve the results they did was tremendous.

“Everyone at the club is extremely proud of them.”

The tour group acknowledge the support of the families of the team, the Vanuatu Football Federation, sponsors IVE Group, Mike Pawley Sports, Cloud 9 Roofing and Guttering, Colne Risk Advisory and Besteam Sport.

The baton is now being handed over to the 2023 W15 group for next year’s tour, so stay tuned!

MWFA’s Female Mentors Making a Difference

MWFA · Jul 20, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Along with several Coach Mentors who work with Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz, MWFA have also recruited two additional Female Mentors this season specifically to directly support several female coaches.

Patricia Faria and Nina Sallenave have both completed their FA C-Licence along with several community coaching courses over recent years, and are both winners of our Female Coaching Scholarship from 2022. They were keen to give back to the sport, share what they have learned and provide guidance to other female coaches.

MWFA Coach Mentors Patricia Faria and Nina Sallenave have a discussion with MWFA Coach Development Manager Eugene Lawrenz.

Patty and Nina have been providing support at their mentee’s training sessions and matches throughout the season, as this provides coaches with assistance ‘on the job’ as a compliment to the courses and workshops we offer, as well as ongoing learning opportunities in a realistic setting. Most importantly though, it is about having good female coaching role models and creating connections so the coaches know they have help when they want it.

“The most important thing I’ve learned is how to keep the kids engaged. Although I still play myself, it’s also been really useful to learn about how valuable it is to demonstrate when you are trying to teach them something. It’s something I never thought about before, because as a player you usually just went through all the generic drills, but there’s a lot more to it. On one hand it’s quite simple to do, but it can also be quite detailed. My training has changed a lot since the beginning of the season. The mentoring has been amazing! Patty has been really helpful, and it probably also helps that she is also a mum so she gets what I’m thinking!”

– Yasmina Poljak (Forest Killarney U7)

The other mentees include Sarah Allchurch (Avalon W11), Shannon Clarke (Curl Curl W14), Kate Ryder and Lisa Bacic (Forest Killarney W9). Next season, we hope to expand this program to include even more mentors and even more mentees to develop and grow the female game further.

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

MWFA · Jul 19, 2023 · Leave a Comment

On Sunday and Tuesday, we’ll see plenty of Women’s Premier League catch-up games take place. Seaforth and Beacon Hill are engaged in a fierce battle for the title, while third placed Manly Vale will be hoping that their next two games can move them up the ladder.

Seaforth have had a brilliant week: they won the State Cup on Saturday and then regained WPL top spot on Tuesday with a 3-0 triumph over Curl Curl. The league leaders host Manly Vale at Seaforth Oval, with Vale looking for a return to winning ways after defeat in Round 9 ended their four game WPL winning streak.

Beacon Hill were narrowly defeated by Seaforth in Saturday’s State Cup Final, losing 1-0 in a tight game. They’ll want to make amends for that game and their midweek loss to Wakehurst when they take on Curl Curl, who themselves need three points as they look to close the gap to fourth placed Wakehurst, so there will be plenty on the line at Beacon Hill Reserve.

At Kitchener Park, Pittwater RSL host Manly Allambie. There was a 2-2 draw when these two teams met in Round 4 and we can expect another close contest on Sunday afternoon – victory for Manly Allambie will boost their chances of avoiding the wooden spoon.

Then on Tuesday night, Brookvale join in on the fun as they are set to play Manly Vale at Grahams Reserve. Brookvale are looking to move away from the bottom of the table, and this fixture could be a tricky test for Manly Vale as it comes only two days after they play Seaforth.

MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 19 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jul 19, 2023 · Leave a Comment

It’s an exciting time in local football and we’re looking forward to Men’s Premier League Round 19 – there’s plenty to play for at both ends of the table!

Pittwater RSL moved into first place with a Round 18 away win over CC Strikers. However, their next opponents are Harbord, who are undefeated in their last six games. With Pittwater fighting for the title and Harbord battling to stay out of the bottom two, everything points to a fascinating game at Kitchener Park.

Manly Vale are currently in tenth and looking to capitalise on any dropped points from the teams directly above them on the table. Next up for Vale is a meeting with Narrabeen at David Thomas Reserve, and Narrabeen will be keen to regain top spot after having the bye last weekend.

Lionel Watts Oval will be the venue for a clash between two teams trying to end winless runs. Wakehurst know victory is a must if they are to have any chance of making the finals, and CC Strikers need three points to keep their title hopes alive.

Mosman are showing excellent form, with three wins and a draw in their last four games. They travel to Beacon Hill Reserve, where they will face a Beacon Hill side looking to get back in the winner’s circle after two consecutive defeats.

Finally, BTH Raiders earned a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over Wakehurst on the weekend. BTH make the trip to Grahams Reserve and will try to keep that momentum going against Brookvale, who have plenty of motivation as the three teams above them on the ladder are within reach.

FIVE MWFA CLUBS WIN AT 2023 STATE CUP FINALS

MWFA · Jul 18, 2023 · Leave a Comment

The weekend of the 15-16th July saw the successful return of the Football NSW State Cup Finals for the first time since 2019.

Following three years of cancellations due to COVID-19 and inclement weather, the highly anticipated return of the Finals went ahead at Cromer Park in Manly, with fourteen new State Cup Champions crowned.

As well as hosting the 2023 event, Manly Warringah Football Association (MWFA) came away from the weekend with the most State Cup titles, amassing five titles from their local clubs.

MWFA CEO David Mason was delighted with the weekend’s proceedings.

“The Football NSW State Cup Finals was a fantastic conclusion to this year’s competition and the MWFA was proud to show teams from all over NSW the tremendous facility we have here at Cromer Park,” he said.

“It was particularly pleasing to see five local MWFA teams take out State Cup Finals and we hope all teams had a good football experience at the Home of Football on the Northern Beaches.”

Community clubs from across Football NSW were eligible to enter teams, with Sutherland Shire Football Association (SSFA) also representing strongly and taking home four titles across the weekend. Remarkably, three of those came from the local Cronulla Seagulls FC representing an outstanding individual club achievement.

Football NSW CEO, John Tsatsimas, was thrilled to see the State Cup Finals thriving once again.

“We were proud to see the return of the Football NSW State Cup in 2023, bringing together some of the best players from across the state,” he said.

“It is a tournament with a long history that has seen some household names participate in the past and I’m sure some future stars were there competing over the weekend.

“Football NSW thanks the Manly Warringah Football Association and Manly United Football Club for their tremendous support in hosting the 2023 event at Cromer Park.”

The 2023 event was hosted at Cromer Park due to FIFA’s use of Football NSW’s Valentine Sports Park as a training base for the French women’s national team during the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 11 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jul 14, 2023 · Leave a Comment

It’s getting close to the end of the Women’s Premier League season! Round 11 is on Sunday and, as was the case with Round 10, only two games will be played due to clashes with the Football NSW State Cup.

Third placed Manly Vale will be looking to put pressure on the top two with victory against Brookvale at Grahams Reserve. A repeat of Vale’s Round 4 triumph over Brookvale would see them close to within a point of Beacon Hill and Seaforth. As for Brookvale, victory is a must if they are to keep their finals hopes alive.

Pittwater RSL are also trying to close the gap to the top four – as things stand they are six points away from fourth placed Wakehurst. However, their next game is at home to Manly Allambie, who defeated Pittwater in the Challenge Cup and drew against them in Round 4, so we could see another close battle between these two sides.

We would also like to congratulate Beacon Hill and Seaforth on their progression to the All Age Women’s State Cup Final, a deserved reward for two teams that have played excellent football in 2023.

League leaders Beacon Hill were 2-0 winners over Northern Suburbs FA side Northbridge in the semi-finals, and Seaforth defeated Thirroul (Football South Coast) 3-0 in the final four, setting up a fascinating encounter between the top two MWFA Women’s Premier League sides in the State Cup Final.

The State Cup Final will be played at 3pm on Saturday, so if you’re in the area, head down to Cromer Park and watch two MWFA clubs battle for the State Cup title!

MEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 18 PREVIEW

MWFA · Jul 13, 2023 · Leave a Comment

We’re heading into the business end of the MWFA Men’s Premier League season! New league leaders Narrabeen have a bye this weekend, which gives the chasing pack a chance to close the gap, or even overtake them.

This weekend’s action is headlined by a clash between third placed CC Strikers and second placed Pittwater at St Matthews Farm Reserve. A three game winless run has seen Strikers lose top spot, so they will fight for every loose ball as they attempt to move back into first place. However, Pittwater have won their last four games – a fifth consecutive win will see them move to the top of the table.

Mosman gave themselves faint hopes of a league title with last week’s 1-0 win over Strikers, now they are only six points off first place. Their next assignment is an away game against a Harbord side coming off a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Beacon Hill. Despite the gap between these two sides on the ladder, this fixture is unlikely to be one sided as Harbord need more positive results to stay out of the bottom two.

Fifth placed Wakehurst know three points are a must if they want to sneak into the finals places come the end of the season. They travel to Terrey Hills Oval for a meeting with BTH Raiders, and the Tigers will be confident of victory after a 5-1 win over BTH earlier in the campaign.

Beacon Hill are another side trying to keep their top four ambitions alive. Manly Vale are Beacon Hill’s next opponents, and Vale will be hoping that home field advantage can propel them to a much-needed win as they look to close the gap to Harbord.

Finally, St Augustine’s meet Brookvale at Cromer Park as part of the annual Saints Ladies Day, a wonderful occasion held in memory of the late Helen Anglicas, a woman remembered fondly by both clubs. This event will run from 8:30am until 5:30pm, so if you’re in the area, head down to Cromer – you can find out more about Saints Ladies Day by clicking here.
