MWFA profile: Sam Webber

SAM Webber is one of those blokes you can’t help but admire.

Each winter he is a key member of CC Strikers’ Premier League squad, and come the warmer months in summer, his attention turns to grade cricket with Manly, where he is a talented wicket keeper.

“I’m happy to juggle both sports, I’ve done so for a while now,”the 24-year-old said.

“It is a big commitment, training twice a week for what seems likes 12 months a year, but I love it.”

Webber, who is a right-winger,began playing Premier League at St Matthews Farmin 2015.

He believes their ongoing success is simple – coach Ryan Butcher.

“Bushy is a massive reason why everyone is on the same page,” he said.

“We are a happy squad, everyone is prepared to work hard for each other.

“It would have been great to win the Cup final (against Brookvale) a couple of weeks ago,but we let it slip.

“Hopefully it will spur us on to do well in the semis coming up.”

Away from football and cricket, Webber is studying an economics degree.

It has been a hard slog at times, but this looms as his final semester before he graduates.

“I’ll be happy to get it done,” he said.

“I’ve taken my time with it, I’ve also played cricket with Sheffield in the UK for a couple of off-seasons.

“Playing a match with (England Test captain) Joe Root was a great experience, I’m actually good mates with his brother.”

Don’t be surprised to see Webber leave an impact come semi-final time or potentially on grand final day for CC Strikers- he has scored nine goals this campaign.
