MWFA PlayinPurple for Pancreatic Cancer

MWFA · Jun 23, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Football fields across Australia and the Northern Beaches were turned purple for pancreatic cancer on the weekends of June 12th and 19th with 14 MWFA clubs pulling on their purple socks to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer.

The MWFA clubs again showed massive support for #PlayinPurple with Beacon Hill, Belrose Terrey Hills Raiders, Narrabeen FC, Forest Killarney, Manly Vale, Manly Allambie, Brookvale, Dee Why, Wakehurst, St Augustines and Curl Curl all taking Part. Also, a special thank you Seaforth, Pittwater RSL and Harbord F.C, which again motivated most of their club to get behind the campaign again in 2021.

Harbord FC and Seaforth FC Men’s O35/5 played in honour of player known to both teams recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer

The #PlayinPurple campaign sees players of all ages, genders and geographies wear purple socks to raise awareness for a disease that is now the third most common cancer killer in Australia this year.  The campaign grows from strength to strength each year with 3 state bodies, 7 high profile associations and 3 A-league clubs all supporting the nationwide awareness raising campaign.

PanKind CEO, Michelle Stewart said, “We were excited to see players of all ages pull on their purple socks to play in purple for pancreatic cancer this June, and again the growing number of clubs in the Manly Warringah Football Association showed their support and passion for this important campaign. The response has been truly incredible again this year with 22 local clubs raising awareness on their local football fields on #PlayinPurple weekends. Awareness on this scale is exactly what we need to help shine a light on this disease and this campaign is a wonderful opportunity to increase engagement between clubs, players and the community, all participating for a very important cause – pancreatic cancer awareness.

Pancreatic cancer is projected to claim more lives than breast cancer and prostate cancer, and each year almost 4,000 people will be diagnosed with approximately 80 per cent of patients diagnosed will die within 12 months. The disease has the lowest survival rates of all main cancer types, yet, despite these figures, pancreatic cancer trails behind other cancers when it comes to funding for research, receiving less than 8 per cent of the funding available

Stuart Hodge, Football NSW CEO, said “Football NSW are very proud to again be supporting such a wonderful community initiative, combining the wonderful code of football with truly ground-breaking campaigns such as #PlayinPurple. We kindly encourage our amazing football family to do their bit in getting behind this quality initiative and we cannot wait to see the code decked out in Purple to show their support for this wonderful cause in the fight against pancreatic cancer.”

There are still several Coach Workshops available before the end of the season, including the popular and important topic of how to effectively approach coaching on match day, which will take place this coming Wednesday June 23 at Cromer Park.

These coach education opportunities aim to provide ongoing guidance and advice throughout the season, and to compliment official FFA coaching courses, with topics based on feedback received on what coaches would find valuable.

Coaches can attend any and all of these workshops if they wish to, even if they are not a member of the club hosting them. More workshops at different clubs and with different topics will be added throughout the season too.

Vale too good for Mosman at woolly HQ

MWFA · Jun 21, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Manly Vale has solidified third position on the MWFA women’s Premier League ladder after a strong 2-0 win over Mosman on Sunday.

In cold, wet and windy conditions at Cromer Park, Manly scored a goal in each half and ran away with a deserved victory.

“I think our girls were too good yesterday,” Vale coach Tony Bruzzano said. “We did the little things really well in testing conditions. It was actually a good match.

“We were very wary of Mosman, they’ve strung a few results together lately and we prepared as well as we could.”

Vale midfielders Samantha Spackman and Georgia Goulding controlled the match in the first half and combined for the first goal in the 30th minute. After Goulding won possession in midfield she dribbled forward and slipped a fine through ball behind a Mosman opponent. From outside the 18-yard box Spackman connected sweetly first time and sent the ball into the top corner of the net.

Goulding came off and Laura Janson stepped into midfield with Spackman and the domination continued. Mosman tried to get a reply with a fast start in the second half but Manly Vale weathered the storm. And came back with a storm of their own.

Twenty minutes into the second half Jules Waugh played provider and Spackman finished again for 2-0. And though Vale had other chances that’s how it finished. Bruzzano said he was happy with the performance backing up from a mid-week catchup game.

“The girls are playing with a bit more confidence now, building up nicely for the second round. And we now prepare for a massive match next week, against top-of-the-table Manly Allambie,” Bruzzano said.

In other games Manly Allambie beat Pittwater RSL 6-0 while Seaforth were equally ruthless crushing Brookvale 6-0.

Wakehurst 4-3 over Narrabeen

MWFA · Jun 21, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Wakehurst has roared into fourth position on the MWFA Premier League ladder after a last-gasp 4-3 win over Narrabeen on Saturday.

In a high-quality fixture at Narrabeen Sports High the visitors scored in the final minutes to “suck the life out of” Ross Talarico’s side which had equalised in the 80th minute.

“At full-time there was honest disappointment,” Talarico said. “To come so close to getting a draw and lose it in the last minute, sucks the life out of you.”

Wakehurst went up 2-0 after 30 minutes before Josh Coleman, who was among Narrabeen’s best, scored a brilliant goal in the 35th minute, turning his man and volleying home.

At half-time Talarico told his team they “must be better in every facet”.

“We knew if we just raised our game a little it was there for the taking,” Talarico said.

Twenty minutes into the second half Tom Opie equalised for Narrabeen when he bundled the ball in after a low cross.

Wakehurst went ahead again before Coleman got his deuce in the 80th minute with a left foot strike from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Then Wakehurst nailed the winner at the death.

Talarico lauded Gutierrez O’Farrell for his “link up play upfront” and Tomas Pospisil for an “energetic display in midfield”.

“We moved the ball very well and our fighting spirit got us out of difficult situations. But mental lapses hurt us as they have in the last few weeks.

“Afterwards I told the boys if we can play as badly as we did and still be in with a shout and compete for the full ninety against the best sides in the competition, the sky is the limit.

“I’m expecting a big turnaround this coming week,” Talarico said.

In other games Saint Augustine’s beat BTH Raiders 3-1, Manly Vale went down 4-2 to CC Strikers, Curl Curl hammered Harbord 4-0 while Mosman made a statement at Grahams Reserve beating Brookvale 3-2.

“Bring it on”: Juergens bullish ahead of crunch game with Beenies

MWFA · Jun 18, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Narrabeen sits fourth on the MWFA men’s Premier League ladder, Wakehurst is one point back in sixth position. Narrabeen has scored 30 goals in thirteen games while Wakehurst has scored 29 goals. Narrabeen has conceded 16 goals, Wakehurst has conceded 18 goals.

By most measures, Saturday’s round 14 fixture should be a tight one. Yet Wakehurst will travel to Narrabeen High with that one great intangible: momentum.

They beat Saints 3-2 last week and BTH 2-1 the week before. The week before that was an epic 4-4 draw with competition leaders CC Strikers, a game both coaches felt Wakehurst deserved to win. Prior to that there were victories over Harbord (4-0) and Mosman (2-1).

Wakehurst is riding a wave. And their coach Paul Juergens knows it.

“The whole squad is bouncing with momentum,” Juergens told MWFA media. “Both squads are ready for the weekend. Narrabeen is an awkward team to play against and in the first round they were impressive. We are a better team now and found some form so we are looking forward to the battle.”

Juergens said he’ll be missing key players but said the club has “depth” and “no excuses”. “We have been working on all aspects of the game. In this league you have to perform all around the park or you pay the price.

“Bring it on,” Juergens said.

In other games last-placed Manly Vale host top-placed CC Strikers, Saint Augustine’s play BTH Raiders, Curl Curl play Harbord, Brookvale take on Mosman and Seaforth play host to Adam Israel’s in-form “sleeping giant” Pittwater RSL at Seaforth Oval. All games kick-off at 3pm.

In-form Mosman looking for round one revenge

MWFA · Jun 18, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Manly Vale, according to Mosman women’s Premier League coach, Josh Ayscough, is one of the top sides in the league. Physical, attacking, direct, they have myriad methods to score and fit, aggressive midfield and defence.

But Ayscough still thinks Mosman will win this weekend’s MWFA match-of-the-round. Because, among other reasons, a desire for revenge.

“Manly Vale is one of the top sides in the league,” Ayscough said ahead of Sunday’s round 10 fixture at Allan Border Oval. “They are physical and very dangerous in wide areas either driving in at goal or crossing.

“I think we’ll win by winning the midfield battle. We didn’t have our combinations setup last time we played. But the girls have really clicked recently and are very capable having shots on goal.

“We’re expecting a very hard match and we’re hoping to get some revenge for the [2-0] round one loss.”
While Mosman welcomes back midfielders Phoebe Pincus and Lauren Stein, Ayscough admitted that Sarah Carr is a big out for his team. “She has been great in the midfield, very creative and helps us press in defence, we will miss her energy and flare.

“On the plus side Phoebe and Lauren are back and will bring a great work-rate to the team and quality of play to set up our forwards. They’ll really help us when it gets into those critical final stages.

“And our defenders have been training really well. It comes from being challenged by strikers growing in confidence. Centre-backs Clodagh Hill and Cait le Bas have been really strong in the training pitch,” Ayscough said.
After an ordinary start to the year Mosman appears to have hit their stride, winning their last three and sitting in fifth position – four points behind Manly Vale. Ayscough said his team has “training to be more in control whether that’s with the ball or without”.

“We want to organise quicker to give ourselves more options and hopefully create more opportunities. We’ve let ourselves down by not controlling the game or tempo. And if we can get over that hurdle I think we’re in for a good second half of the year,” Ayscough said.

In other games BTH Raiders take on Wakehurst, Seaforth host Brookvale and high-flying Manly Allambie do battle with Pittwater RSL at Millers Reserve. Beacon Hill shall enjoy the bye.

Warriors: Mosman knock over Pittwater 3-0

MWFA · Jun 15, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Mosman women’s Premier League coach Josh Ayscough has paid tribute to his team’s “enormous heart and determination” after their 3-0 win over Pittwater RSL at Melwood Oval on Sunday.

“Due to injuries, illness and players away we only had thirteen players available,” Ayscough said. “it meant that everyone in the squad played reserves and first grade. It was a huge effort.”

Mosman opened the scoring in the 39th minute after a mad scramble and several ricochets in the middle of the box Isobel Pritchard finally poked the ball home.

Arabella Baker grabbed Mosman’s 2nd in the 60th minute with a belter from the top of the 18-yard box. On her non-dominant left foot the ball shot straight into the top corner. Baker had a 2nd in the 82nd minute when she got in behind the defence and tucked the ball home under the keeper.

Ayscough said Baker was “everywhere up front”.

“She showed great composure in front of goal to score those two. We created a lot of good chances in the first half and were a little unlucky not to have scored more.

“We need to work on maintaining possession and practice more patience with the ball. There were times when we forced a pass or got caught on the ball which put us under unnecessary pressure. If we can instead switch the play or recycle the ball I think we can be more dominant over the 90 minutes,” Aysough said.

Ayscough said goal-keeper Claudia Vogel was outstanding.

“She was brave throughout coming out to strikers’ feet and made some crucial saves. She throughly deserved a clean sheet.

“And Melissa Melrose at right-back worked tirelessly throughout the game in attack and defence as well as really driving the team particularly as we tired,” Ayscough said.

Like Mosman, Pittwater RSL also had several players backing up.

“They are such a hard-working team and had a number of good chances throughout the game. They’ll definitely cause some upsets in the 2nd half of the season,” Ayscough said.

In the other game on Sunday Manly Allambie and Wakehurst contested a 0-0 draw at Millers Reserve.

Sleeping giant wakes: Pittwater RSL blitz Brookvale 3-0

MWFA · Jun 15, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Pittwater RSL is out from under the radar. For the second week in a row Adam Israel’s team has scored three goals against a second-placed team and conceded none. Put it to Israel that following the win over Brookvale at Kitchener Park on Saturday “the sleeping giant” has awoken and he’ll laugh.

“Mate, I like the sound of it! But we’re not getting carried away. Brookie was missing a number of key players as Curly was the week before. We were just better on the day. And better than we have been for a number of weeks,” Israel said.

Pittwater opened the scoring when Kye Conna scored an excellent individual goal, beating several players from the edge of the 18-yard box before slotting the ball just inside the side netting.

Pittwater had their second before half-time when big centre-back Aiden Currie rifled in a bullet-like header from the penalty spot, the ball flying into the top corner. Israel described the Pittwater junior’s celebration as “mad” and “lovely”.
“He’s a quiet lad, normally, nice and placid. But his celebration was next level and great to watch,” Israel said.

Pittwater iced the cake in the 75th minute when a long throw-in found Bill Benton’s head before Nelson Pyl poked the ball home on the far post. Israel said it’s a play the team has been working on.

“It’s nice when things you’ve been working on come to fruition. And it’s pleasing that we’ve finally strung some results together. It just happened to be against second place and second place. We went from eighth position to 5th position. We’ve conceded and scored a similar number of goals as the teams in third, fourth.

“Again, the ‘sleeping giant’ thing? I like the sound of it. But reality is Brookie and Curly were missing key players. But you don’t beat two second-placed teams without 8 or 9 of your team being on their game. It shows we’re on the right track,” Israel said.
