FUN was the order of the day when Manly Vale hosted the first ever Manly Warringah Football Association under-9s girls Gala Day at David Thomas Reserve last Sunday.

Games were staged across three small sided pitches from 8.30am, with participation and enjoyment the primary aims.

Louise Walker, the MWFAs girls and womens vice president of football, felt the day was a big success.

It was great seeing so many smiling faces from the players,” she said.

“The parents also raved about the concept.

This is the first season some girls have played football in all female teams.

Manly Vale also did a terrific job hosting the event.

Further girls gala days will be staged over the coming weeks in the under-8s, 10s and 11s age groups.

Following the success of the Matildas at the last World Cup, female football continues to surge in popularity.

The MWFA has catered for this by introducing all girls age groups in the under-8s and under-9s this year, with healthy numbers justifying the decision.

Club football is also a pathway for talented young female footballers to earn their stripes before potentially entering the representative arena with Manly United and beyond.
