MWFA Premier League round 8 review

karonsaunders · May 28, 2018 ·

WAKEHURST sent out an emphatic message to the rest of the competition on Saturday, outclassing Manly Vale 9-0 at Lionel Watts.

The Tigers have been inconsistent so far in 2018, but at home they were ‘on’ from the kick-off.

Sheldon Tweedie (3), Michael Ball (2), Jeremy Ord (1), Russell Webster (1), John Bushnell (1) and Dan Stuart (1) scored the goals, and coach Paul Juergens believes the Tigers can scale even bigger heights.

“It shows what can happen when we click,” he said.

“Pre game I told the boys to show their character and commitment.

“We focused on the basics, keeping the ball and playing to feet.

“I was happy to see so many different goal scorers and we were ruthless, we kept playing even though it was 5-0 at halftime.”

The remarkable result sees Wakehurst now in sixth spot on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Brookvale beat Narrabeen 2-0, Mosman stunned Dee Why 4-0, Seaforth upset CC Strikers 1-0 and Pittwater RSL FC did just enough to get the better of St Augustine’s 3-2.

PITTWATER RSL FC captain Mitch Macedo is a tad nervous leading into Saturday’s home clash against St Augustine’s.

Saints aren’t known for their consistency, making them a tough proposition to prepare for.

“I don’t know what to expect from them to be honest,” Macedo said.

“Generally they are well drilled and after beating Seaforth last week they will be feeling confident.

“I thought we were decent last weekend versus Wakehurst (3-0 win), we don’t have the best record at Lionel Watts, so we were happy with that performance and result.

“We are ticking along nicely at the moment, we are building some consistency.”

Elsewhere, Brookvale take on Narrabeen at Cromer Park on Friday night from 7.30pm, Seaforth tackle CC Strikers, Dee Why host Mosman and Wakehurst entertain Manly Vale.

MANLY Vale’s players are bracing themselves for a resurgent Avalon when the squads go head to head this Sunday at Careel Bay.

The Reds have finally clicked into gear, winning their last three games (including State Cup) after losing five matches on the trot in the league.

“We always expected them to come good,” Manly Vale co-coach Roland Winter said.

“It was hard to understand their slow start,Avalon are a quality side.

“We can take plenty of confidence from our last start win against Wakehurst, everyone worked hard across the 90 minutes and we got the result.

“The aim is to build on that performance.”

It promises to be a big day at Careel Bay, with Avalon hosting Super Sunday – A Celebration of Female Football.

Matildas star Chloe Logarzo will make a guest appearance.

Elsewhere, Manly Allambie host Beacon Hill in a juicy top of the table clash, Wakehurst take on Seaforth and Brookvale do battle with Forest Killarney.

MWFA profile: The boys from Hunch

karonsaunders · May 24, 2018 ·

UNLESS you have been living under a rock or don’t use social media, chances are you would have come cross Hunch.

The brainchild of Dee Why Premier League duo Patrick Flaherty and Matt Cooper as well as close friend Will Brown, they have provided a unique and entertaining insight to northern beaches football.

This week they spoke to the MWFA this week about their journey online.

*How did you come up with the idea originally and when?

I doubt they’ll make a movie about how we started (www.hunch.club). If they do, I want Denzel Washington to play me (Paddy). Coops I reckon have Joshua Brohlin (chin) and Patrick Swayze’s character from the 1991 Point Break film for Will. Probably a stretch to call it an initial idea but more an evolution of several bad ones. We’re close mates who played footy together and loved ripping team mates with pictures/match reports etc. We also saw an opportunity around the social side which is what formed the basis for a tipping style comp. Time wise, we’ve just passed the first 12 months with over 1000 followers on Facebook with over 300 active users on the website each week which is awesome considering we’re only in the Prems and recently AL/1s.

*What was the initial then ongoing feedback?

Mixed feedback on the first website. Everyone seemed to get on board early on though. In our defence, we literally started with a few spreadsheets and a dodgy website we put together in a few days. We’re super stoked and thankful people supported us from day one. Like a 12-year-old striker with a beard, we’re still growing and changing daily and we will look different again in 12 months.

*Expectations?

To be interviewed by you Mr Prentice for the MWFA distribution email is what dreams are made of. See how we go. Were having fun, getting more people involved and keep growing. Certainly plans to grow across more leagues, states, country one day. Bit a work to go.

*Challenges to overcome?

Getting rid of (David) Guzzo on the comments is the first challenge. That bloke is non stop. Juggling between our busy schedules is the key challenge.

*Name the gentleman behind the process and what they do for work.

Will Brown is in advertising (retired from footy, but we reckon its because he couldnt even get in Manly Vale’s ressies) Matt Cooper’s a Health and Safety Manager (he’s also the leagues top league scorer chin machine) and Patrick Flaherty is in recruitment (ex Stoke City but no one has ever seen evidence….).

*Successful recent element – the tipping comps over Prems and AL./1s – plans for more?

Its a few things to be honest. We know the new website is solid so we will keep improving it and rolling it out across different leagues (hit us up if you think your league would be keen). Hitting little milestones like 1k likes on Facebook last week was huge for us considering we’ve spent zero dollars on marketing. Next one is 10k followers and 1k users for the site.

*Future of Hunch?

New podcast is coming out soon, new roll out to new leagues coming up. Were growing the team so if you fancy yourself a photoshop whiz or can write to our style or want to help on the admin get in touch via Facebook. We’re still asking people to register even though we’re nearly half way through the season www.hunch.club for more.

With the 2018 season in full swing, Manly Warringah Football Association would like to remind all parents, coaches and managers of the need to ensure their actions are in line with the highest levels of respect, support and behaviour towards match officials, coaches, managers, players and fellow spectators in line with the FFA Spectator Code of Behaviour (which is attached).

As parents and role models, your behaviour influences not only your children but those around you and MWFA is committed to ensuring the sports fields are safe, friendly and welcoming environments.

It is not just the registered players who need to show respect and it is not just the players who are bound by a Code of Behaviour.

MWFA ladies Premier League round seven review

karonsaunders · May 21, 2018 ·

BEACON Hill remain the team everyone is chasing following Sunday’s 3-1 win against old foes Brookvale.

Gun striker Ayse Adalis finished with a brace for the hosts in what was another impressive team performance at Beacon Hill Oval.

“It was a tough game, I really enjoyed it,” Beacon Hill coach Vince Vescio said.

“Brookie are a good team, I’m sure they will end up right up there, their midfield were very dangerous.

“Ayse (Adalis)…I don’t know what else I can say about her, she is just so deadly in front of goal.

“I was also happy in how we bounced back after the (recent) Avalon defeat.”

Elsewhere, goals from Jules Waugh and Sav Geddes saw Manly Vale topple Wakehurst 2-0 and Manly Allambie moved up to second spot after outclassing Seaforth 3-0.

Forest Killarney host Avalon, who won their state cup game, on Tuesday night at Melwood Oval.

MWFA Premier League round seven review

karonsaunders · May 21, 2018 ·

MOSMAN have proved they are the real deal this season after a gutsy 3-3 draw versus Brookvale on Saturday.

The Blues were 2-0 up, only to see Mark Parkins and Finn McDonald square proceedings leading into halftime.

When Lucas Cura slotted a penalty to make it 3-2 in favour of the Whales, a boilover was looming.

A late effort from Brookie saw honours even at Allan Border Oval.

“We showed great character, we had key injuries pre-game and then three of our guys got hurt during the game, ” proud Mosman coach Josh Ayscough said.

“It left us with one replacement in the first half, it was looking dire.

“The mentality was great, we would have lost that game easily last year.

“I’m happy with a point, now we have to back it up against Dee Why this weekend.”

Elsewhere, CC Strikers beat the Swans 4-2 on Friday night, Pittwater RSL FC cruised to a 3-0 win over Wakehurst, St Augustine’s upset Seaforth 1-0 and Narrabeen won for the first time in 2018, beating Manly Vale 2-1.

MWFA profile: The Avalon Development Squad

karonsaunders · May 17, 2018 ·

IF you head up to the Careel Bay mini fields on any given Monday, expect to be greeted by a sea of red.

The man behind Avalon’s Development Squads is Jud Harrison, and he finds the process extremely rewarding.

“We usually have about 90 kids taking part each week, from the under-6s through to the under-13s,” he said.

“The process began a few years ago, and it is very popular, numbers have doubled from 2017.

“Ultimately the aim is to develop fundamental skills and offer a pathway for players to our teams in the women’s MWFA Premier League and men’s AL/1s.

“At the moment it is only open to registered Avalon players.”

Avalon have always been a club where success has followed, especially in the women’s age groups.

On Tuesday night the Lady Reds won their third successive MWFA Challenge Cup final, which followed their success in the MWFA grand final last year at Cromer Park.

The club’s under-16/1 girls, coached by Harrison, have also left a big imprint locally as well in the NSW Champion of Champions and State Cup.

Avalon’s Development Squads follow the FFA curriculum, which sees Harrison and his coaching assistants working closely with MWFA community coach Chris Adams.

“I can’t thank Chris enough, his input has been invaluable,” Harrison, whose girls Zara and Lexi play for the club, said.

“We are confident the (Avalon)Development Squads will continue to grow.”
