LAST season was a real struggle for Beacon Hill.
They turned up every week in the men’s AL/1s competition and despite being on the end of some heavy defeats, smiles remained among the playing group.
Coach Ash Mathieson knew in the off-season he had to recruit and has done so astutely.
While he didn’t declare his squad will be in the mix for a top four spot in 2018, there is an air of expectation leading into Sunday’s round one MWFA Challenge Cup game versus fellow AL/1s squad Avalon at Cromer Park.
“We are looking good, we have plenty of new faces from here and there,” Mathieson said.
“Avalon were in the top four last year, that is a position we would obviously like to be in eventually.
“In pre-season we held our own against a few Premier League teams, so the signs are good.”
On Sunday Beacon Hill tackle the Reds on Cromer 1 from 9am.
Next up at 11am is Mosman versus Wakehurst, with Harbord Seasiders United tackling Seaforth at 1pm before Pittwater RSL FC lock horns with BTH Raiders from 3pm.
Other games see Curl Curl do battle with Dee Why, St Augustine’s line up against Brookvale, Narrabeen play Manly Allambie and Manly Vale will look to upstage CC Strikers.
The Womens MWFA Challenge semi finals will also be played on Sunday with Manly Vale facing Seaforth (5pm) and Avalon taking on Wakehurst at 7pm (see separate story).
