EARLIER this year, the forward thinking Manly Warringah Football Association launched a female coaching scholarship program.
The initiative will see two women’s coaches obtaintheir FFA/AFC C Licence, paid for by the MWFA, come October.
Lyndal Carruthers (Avalon) and Cerise Brooks (Mosman) are the two scholarship winners for 2017, and the former can’t wait for the week long course in two months at Cromer Park.
“Football has always been a big part of my life,” 48-year-old Carruthers said.
“I still play (All Age Division One) for Avalon, last year I was in Premier League.
“My two teenage daughters are also playing these days, we share the same passion for the game.
“I’ve previously done my Game Training Certificate down at Cromer Park, I am keen to keep learning on the run.”
Carruthers is also on Avalon’s committee.
She is the senior women’s age co-ordinator for the Reds and the club’s Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO), a mandatory requirement for all MWFA clubs from Football NSW.
Long term, the MWFA hope the annual scholarship will see an increase when it comes to female coaches, who can then support others with similar ambition as part of the FFA Club Coach Coordinator Program.
The MWFA currently have 1494 coaches across the association however only 12% of these coaches are female, the MWFA want to see this figure increase to 20 % by 2022.
