YOU almost have to feel sorry for Ross Talarico.
Imagine taking over as head coach of Narrabeen FC in the MWFA Premier League after the feats of the 2016 squad.
Throw in the fact key trio Jakub Sklenar, Justin Hayward and Josh Lawson all moved on and you get an understanding of the monumental task Talarico faced in pre-season.
“It has been challenging, but I’ve absolutely loved it,” he said this week.
“I wasn’t worried about trying to achieve what we did last year, it is near impossible.
“It was my chance to put my stamp on the team and I would like to think I’ve done that.”
Talarico began coaching juniors in 2008 after deciding it was time to hang up the boots.
The former goalkeeper with Brookvale juggled positions at Beacon Hill and Narrabeen, before accepting the Beenies top job ahead of the 2017 MWFA Premier League campaign.
“I love putting my (coaching) thoughts into practice,” Talarico said.
“It is such a rewarding spot to be in, seeing players execute game plans and realise their potential as footballers.
“I’ve blooded quite a few young boys this year, which will help their development.
“Once we rebuild, I’m confident we (Narrabeen) can again be a force again, it always takes time.”
Talarico is happy to cut his teeth coaching locally before eventually moving into the representative arena with Manly United.
He knows patience is key – so until then it is all about constantly evolving.
It is safe to assume he will – because for Talarico, football is life.
