16 games – 16 wins – Wakehurst O35-1s

WFC O35-1

IT is looming as the perfect season – and Wakehurst’s 35/1s men’s squad are well aware of the potential milestone.

After 16 rounds, they have won all 16 games locally, securing the title weeks ago.

As it stands, their points tally of 48 doubles their nearest rivals – Mosman and Manly Vale.

Co-coached by Darren Leach and Nick Sheather, the veteran Tigers clearly still have what it takes to excel on the pitch.

And in news which will warm the hearts of footballers across the peninsula, their secret to success is simple – no training.

“We just turn up on a Friday night or a Saturday afternoon and play,” Leach said.

“Some of us have been playing together on and off since our early 20s in the (MWFA) Premier League.

“Our combinations are fairly good, and we have a squad of 19, so that makes numbers pretty flexible if someone goes away or has a little knock.”

According to Leach, Adam Townsend has been the standout in orange and black, while the Sheather brothers – Cam, Nick and Tim – also have been tearing opposition defences to shreds.

Beyond winning their MWFA double, the old timers from Lionel Watts, aged between “38 and about 50”, have also targeted the NSW Champion of Champions title.

“Not training means we are fairly fresh,” Leach said.

“Finishing with three major trophies would be great.

“Ultimately we all just love the game, and we intend to stay together until our bodies decide it is time to hang up the boots.”

Wakehurst’s next game is on Friday night versus Manly Vale at David Thomas Reserve from 7pm.
