MWFA Profile: Val Surjan

Val Surjan may as well have green veins.

The Pittwater RSL FC president has played almost 600 matches in green and white, first representing the club as a five-year-old.

Now in his third year in charge, Surjan previously coached the women when they were in the Premier League and has overseen the IT section (website) since joining the committee in 2010.

“I just love it, I really do,” he said this week.

“Our club motto is we (Pittwater) are the pride of the peninsula, and I firmly believe that.

“So many great people are working behind the scenes to ensure we remain great.”

If he isn’t playing in the over-35s each Saturday afternoon, you can find Surjan in the canteen or watching the Premier League men.

“With Buster (Brooks) in charge they were unbelievable for so many years,” he said.

“Great guys off the pitch as well – I love watching Josh Yeates and Peter Stegic and Stef Teghini, before he retired.

“Adam (Israel) has done a great job since taking over, I expect the boys to have a big year.”

In recent years, Surjan has been responsible for futsal thriving at neighbouring Pittwater RSL, the club’s main sponsor.

Eventually he would also love to see a synthetic pitch at Kitchener.

“We need to keep evolving as a club and you do that by looking after players at all levels,” he said.

“Synthetic surfaces are the future for football locally.”
