MWFA Profile – Larry Bates

AVALON are flying in the women’s MWFA Premier League – and the architect has been Larry Bates.

The former ladies first grade boss at Manly United, who also has coached in Newcastle and for the North Shore Mariners, is loving his time in charge at Careel Bay.

“Obviously it is early days, but so far, so good,” he said.

“A first up draw (0-0) with Wakehurst followed by a (3-0) win against Brookvale, you have to be happy with that.

“The girls are talented but also willing to learn, which is always vital.”

Bates, who has a B Advanced FFA coaching licence, feels he has gone full circle after his daughter’s learnt the basics as junior Reds.

“Elyce (27) and Kirra (19) are enjoying themselves playing Premier League,” he said.

“I was brought in to fix the culture of the club – it won’t take long, good people are working together behind the scenes.

“Avalon is a great club with so much potential, I am happy to be part of the process.”

Away from football, Bates is working at Pittwater High.

He loves engaging with the students in his role as a general assistant.

Bates’ squad have the Easter break off before hosting Harbord Seasiders United at home on Sunday, April 23.
