ST Augustine’s run to the MWFA FA Cup final this season has been nothing short of brilliant.
Narrabeen (4-0), Seaforth (7-0) and Manly Vale (5-0), have been brushed aside with ease, setting up a showdown with either Pittwater RSL FC or CC Strikers, who play on Monday night at Cromer Park.
The architect of Saints success has been new coach Nick Tomaino.
Formerly on the books of Manly United in a youth capacity, he wanted a new challenge.
After seeing a number of students from St Augustine’s College excel in junior Manly teams over the years, taking charge of the Premier League squad at Graham Reserve seemed a natural fit.
“I have also built a strong relationship with Dave Anglicas over the years,” Tomaino said.
“He asked me to consider taking on the role, and in the end I decided 2016 was going to be the year.
“It has had its challenges so far, but I am fortunate to be working with a talented group of players.”
Tomaino has three trusty Saints club identities he leans on, in the form of Peter Robertson, Matt Hill and Anthony Vescio.
“Those guys are great, their passion for the squad is second to none,” Tomaino said.
“In terms of our Cup run, their is no secret recipe, in our three games so far we have played brilliant football.”
Tomaino is also targeting a top four finish in the MWFA Premier League.
“At the start of the year I would have taken that with a Cup run,” he said.
“What I like most is that the boys are responsive at training and they are all good blokes.
“We win and we lose together, I intend on hanging around as long as the club want me.”
